11  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Funky Cable Knit Hat on: March 23, 2004 12:09:17 PM
I just wanted to post this hat i made a couple weeks ago that i have been wearing every day.  It is extremely fun to wear, and it was my first experience with cable knitting (which is way easier than i thought it would be)  The hat can be knit up with about 1/2 a skien of red heart chunky or a whole skien of lion brand jiffy.  It is just plain seed stitch with a 8 stitch cable in the center.  I just knit a long rectangle and then folded it over and sewed up the sides, i am sure you could do it on the round as well.   A great "quickie" project!

12  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Hand Spinning Yarn? on: March 23, 2004 11:53:12 AM
Does anyone out there know how to hand spin your own yarn, or have a good resource for doing so online?  With the outragous cost of wool yarn, I was hoping someone would post a tutorial on how to spin your own!  Thanks!

14  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / chopstick/dowel knitting needle tutorial on: February 11, 2004 12:37:47 PM

Well I know someone posted a "how to" about making your own knitting needles somewhere on this board, but I wanted to show you my take on these.
First of all, anyone can make their own needles out of a lot of different things, for example, I made a set of circular needles out of chopsticks that were free thanks to my many Sunday night visits to the china king buffet(I am addicted)  all I did was sharpen the ends with a pencil sharpener, sand them down with some fine sandpaper, rub them with a cloth, rub them with wax paper to fill in the cracks and make them extra smooth, and then re-smooth them with a cloth.

I also love to paint them, but usually I just paint at least 3 to 4 inches away from the tips so it doesn't get chipped.  Also, I use plain old acrylic paint.
You can do many things to the ends of the needles as well.  For example, my favorite things to do are bake sculpey clay onto them (as you can see on the red pair)  and find beads with big enough holes to fit on the end.

This project is fairly easy and quick, but the comments you will get on your beautiful needles will be well worth the work!
Happy Knitting!

15  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Nudie box on: February 06, 2004 06:01:18 PM
This is one of my favorite things to do.
you start out with an old wood box, mine is a recipe box i got at goodwill for 50 cents, and then i cut out the nudes from a picasso painting in an old art history book, glued them on, and then painted in the rest with good ol acrylics, now all it needs is a coat of polyurethane!
