How do you know what size to make? I usually wear a medium in tee shirts, but they fit a bit loose and I can fit easily into a small.

I'm something like 33" bust, 27" waist give or take a few inches, I can't remember now.

I'm going to try to knit one, with long sleeves. Purple and black stripped. I'm so excited.

Make a gauge swatch, with at least 1 inch extra on each side to prevent distortion of your gauge measurement by cast ons, bind offs or edge sts.  From this you will know how many sts cover what distance.  Compare this to your actual measurement (not bra size) or the measurements of a shirt you like the fit of.

"Needles "can refer to 1 pair.  If a pattern wants 2, it should usually says 2 size x circular needles.  You're probably looking a bigger project, which is why circulars are recommended (they coming in longer lengths than straights).

Yes, circulars can be used just like straights, without joining. Smiley

Question: have you touched this yarn in person?

one place you might try is yarndex.

There're a few action shots of different sizes of the pattern as written on Ravelry (need an account to view).

Have you signed up for Ravelry? There are many vest pattern (free & for sale) options there, too.

Something I saw at Stitches Midwest was felt-covered buttons.  It'd be a fun way to use up scrap yarn (as long as 55% of the yarn content is feltable, it'll work).

You can knit it all in the round.  Some patterns start flat & then join to make it easier to avoid twisted stitches.

The top is a moss stitch.
