Here are some patterns for business bags.  Might give you some ideas if you don't like to purchase patterns.

You might be able to start with this basic pattern

Then you can put a binder in the middle where the book would be like this

All three are the same concept, you would just need to alter the basic pattern to fit your needs.

Wish I could have had a bag like this 12 years ago!! My soon -to-be teenager, was a cute baby boy then!! Fantastic bag with loads of pockets, and the colours brighten up anyone's day.This may not be the only one you make, if the other mums see it!!!!! 

You may be right!  My other step-daughter wants to go into business and sell these to all her friends!  It was actually a pretty easy pattern so who knows, I might end up taking orders.

Thank you for the nice comments.  She really liked it and I got many compliments on it at the shower. 

I used Craftapple's diaper bag pattern and made this for my soon to be here grandson.  I wanted to use a fabric that wasn't too babyish, so I used marbles and jacks from the Toybox Fabric Collection by Johnnie Kawan.

The main flap closes with a magnetic snap and the cell phone pocket has Velcro on the flap.  It really holds a lot.  I filled it with bottles, pacifiers, baby wipes, lotion, ect.... and there was still room.
