Here's my first try at crayon melting. It was SUCH fun. I'm definitely going to do this again, and likely use your super shadow box idea! This one was on an ordinary canvas with some silhouette cut outs.

I wonder if using Crayola brand would improve the quality. I bet it would. I got some clumpiness on the drips (which is ok with me), but I rather like that flat, well-blended look, as well.
