1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: New Years Brunch ideas? on: December 02, 2008 07:47:52 AM
no one has any favour ideas? Sad
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / New Years Brunch ideas? on: November 30, 2008 07:26:33 PM
I'm having a brunch at my place with all of my girl friends a few days after new years. I'm thinking of doing a pretty varied spread, since people are coming/staying any time between 11 30 am and 5 pm. It's really more of an open house with brunchy foods than a sit down brunch, and I'm expecting about 20 people throughout the day, ranging in age from 16 to 50+, but mostly twentysomethings.

I want to do favours that tie in with a new years resolution theme, things like a scratch ticket for "take more chances", post it notes for "stick to it!" and a fortune cookie for "get lucky". If anyone has any ideas for what I can use for favours that tie in with this theme let me know.

I'll probably have light music playing. I don't want it to overpower the party, but I don't want it to be silent (though I doubt we will be!)

If anyone has any easy decorating ideas, or a good food idea...or any input...shoot it this way.

I love parties!
3  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Re: Crafting as a subculture-research help needed! on: November 13, 2008 02:20:54 PM
I have finished it, but its not submitted. Its due tomorrow at 4 15 at the latest. However, I have wayyy too much to do tonight for other classes to even consider reworking the whole essay.

I want to thank everyone so much for their input. It really helped me piece together what I was trying to get across all along, as well as add in some new thoughts, spins and opinions.

if I could, I would hit the "this rocks" button for all of you!

If I am happy with the result, and craftster permits, I just might. If its not allowed, I could post it elsewhere, I suppose.

I'm not actually a SS student. I'm in an art program, but we have to take a GEN ED credit each semester. I really only picked soc because I didn't think I could stomach anything else at 8 am. The course is pretty much a breeze apart from the prof cutting off anyone who answers a question.

thank you both so much for your thoughts! This essay is actually starting to piece together now!

"a movement or group that contrasts the larger society"

"a smaller version of a larger society"

I guess essentially that we are a group that is slightly outside the norm, and that we are crafting by choice/want more than out of need.

does that help any? I'm stressing :S

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is really the right board or place to ask, but I'm doing a research project for my sociology class, and my topic is "crafting as a subculture". Essentially its about the crafty things we do and why, and how in recent years the demographic of the subculture has shifted.

I would love to get peoples thoughts on this...

do you consider yourself to be part of a subculture?

if anyone has any advice on where else you think I could research or survey, please let me know!

these are basically the coolest things I've ever seen granny squares made into. I really should get my crocheting friends to teach me so I can make some of these!
