1  Re: Show Off Your Hair! in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by xfoxglove on: October 01, 2007 01:39:22 PM
so i dyed the underside of my hair pink.  i left the dye in really long, but it still came out this light and it only lasted about a week.  i was a little disappointed, but i had mermaid pink hair for a couple of days at least.

2  [ matryoshka sunglasses cozy ] +3pics. in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by xfoxglove on: June 29, 2007 10:31:43 AM
i was out shopping and fell in love with these (ridiculously) huge sunglasses.
they remind me of ones my grandma wore, so i had to get them.
they didn't come with any case, so i made a cozy.

here's the entire thing.  it's a simple sleeve.
i lined it in blue fabric and then it closes with a snap.
it's embellished with an embroidered and appliqued matryoshka doll since i'm mostly russian.

closeup of the doll.
i also stuffed her a little bit so she's more 'plush'.

and here are the glasses with their cozy.

anyway, i hope you all like it.

3  Re: Questions About Hairstyles! in Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions by xfoxglove on: June 02, 2007 10:53:53 AM
i'm going to an art opening in a few days and i want my hair to look special.  i was thinking about doing curls.

my hair is long(ish) and the last time i used the curling iron they didn't come out so well.  i tried using some velcro curlers the other day and well... bad, bad idea.  i ripped a bunch of hair out and they didn't stay in well, so i had to use pins to keep them in.

anyway!  does anybody know how i could get curls?  or maybe what i'm asking for is.. what tool should i use?  my mom said something about rag curlers, but she has short hair and wasn't sure.

here's a photo to show length.

thanks in advance.

so my room mate needed cheering up and I said we could do anything she wanted.  and she said, "can we dye your hair?"  so we did.

it's the underlayer and my 'sideburns'. it was all supposed to be blonde, but ended up this light fiery color since the red that I had going on before seems to now be a permanent part of my hair. oh well, no worries.  i pretty much like any sort of hair color at all, so I wasn't too worried about not achieving the color on the box.

we used some l'oreal super blonde kit thing and there was so much that we did the whole shebang to me twice since we wanted super lightness and the red was tough to lighten.

so, yeah... overall color.

my 'baby hair' at my temples got so light since I didn't want to waste any of the bottle.

better shot of the color underneath.

some people seem to like it.

5  [ miss golightly sleepmask. ] +4pics. in Completed Projects by xfoxglove on: April 09, 2007 04:14:30 PM
so I've been coveting the sleepmask that Audrey Hepburn wears in Breakfast at Tiffany's for ages and my interest was sparked again when my mom put some perfect supplies for it in my easter basket.  anyway, I'm sure this'll make more sense with pictures...

this thing took a bit of planning, just to get it looking well put-together.  blue satin and a soft pink fabric for the part laying against your eyes.  sandwiched between the two is a thicker fabric, plus a few other well-secured pieces to make the 'eyelids'.  braided gold thread for the eyebrows.  then the lashes, the elastic band and some trim around the edge and voila!

the back.  (pink lining.  you can see the elastic band here, too.)

details.  (and, yes, what you heard about working with metallic thread is TRUE!)

action shot.  as I was working on the eyelids, I was wondering if it was even worth it, but you can really notice them and I love how they ended up looking.  even the crease halfway down, like on a real eye.  I feel so cartoon-glamorous in this mask.

comments & critique appreciated as always. thanks.

6  [ birdcage cover. ] +5pics. in Pet-Related Crafts: Completed Projects by xfoxglove on: January 06, 2007 09:29:12 PM
my bird Maya has been being really naughty lately and she chewed through her plastic pet taxi that we used to transport her places.  so we got her a pretty sturdy dog crate, but she gets antsy in the car, so she needs to be covered.  to solve the problem, I headed out to buy fabric and supplies to make a cage cover.

here's the entire thing.

closeup of the slit in the top for the handle to come through.

detail shot of the edging.  it's just some quilt binding, so pretty simple there.

here she is beside it and then there's a picture of us.

comments & critique appreciated. thanks

7  'Quilted' Blanket Questions. in Quilting: Discussion and Questions by xfoxglove on: August 15, 2006 08:09:38 PM
All right, Im not sure if this is the right place to be asking this and I hope it doesnt irritate anybody, but Ive already gone through like 30+ pages of threads and I havent found an answer (perhaps because Im not sure what Im looking for).  But anyway

Im really interested in making this:

Or something similar.

Ive never quilted before.  Im not sure if this is even quilting at all, but this is the closest thing I can relate it to.  So Im hoping someone could help me.

I just want to make a light blanket/throw or something.  So I was thinking I wouldnt have to use batting, per se.  Maybe some other fabric, muslin?

Im not sure how to applique the pieces on?  And then how to stitch it together without the stitches transferring to the back of the blanket and having a 'stitched heart' on the back in thread.

Yeah, sorry for so many questions.  Its just I dont know anybody that I can ask and I figured you guys might have some suggestions.  Everyone here on craftster seems really helpful.  If this is in the wrong spot or if I'm just being completely oblivious, please delete.

Thanks in advance.

(& Im praying that picture shows up.  If not, heres the link: http://tinypic.com/a27xnn.jpg )
