1  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Re: 1850's Dress for the San Francisco Dickens Christmas Fair on: February 12, 2011 06:46:56 PM
That's lovely! I live in SF, too and wanted to go to that fair last year. If you're into historical costuming, you should also check out the Edwardian Ball (http://edwardianball.com)/. I went last year, and it was a lot of fun. There were some amazing costumes.
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / Re: sickeningly adorable valentines gift for a long distance relationship... on: September 02, 2010 05:43:54 PM
Update: we are still together :)We made it the 2 years apart while I finished school, and now we are actually *finally* living in the same place, San Francisco! Thanks for all the comments everyone, it really is true that it's totally possible to stay together... communication was the biggie that pulled us through. A headset is a good idea, we spoke on the phone every day for at 30 minutes- it really helps!

for i_rok:

i'm sure your bf would love it, I got the words to like like printed text by using a stencil, I bought a really cheap one at either hobby lobby or michaels, and i've used it on tons of projects. I think I just painted over with fabric paint (or i might have used acrylic, not sure) Good luck with your long distance relationship, and remember to try to talk to your partner as often as you can Smiley
3  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: Bucketloads of T-shirt Reconstructions! on: January 16, 2010 11:09:40 AM
I love love that skirt. did you make that as well? I need to do a major stash buster like that. my partner has started questioning the necessity of keeping so many fabric scraps around  Roll Eyes

6  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / I relived my childhood- Lisa Frank Unicorn Costume on: November 05, 2009 08:08:40 PM
Wow! There have been some awesome awesome costumes posted on here so far!! I am thoroughly impressed with the awesomeness of all the other craftster costumes!  Smiley

Just for fun, I decided to share mine. I was a Lisa Frank-themed unicorn. I loooooved Lisa Frank when I was a kid. I think it was something about all those neon colors and magical animals. For Halloween this year, I really really wanted an excuse to wear this ridiculous rainbow tutu that I had been working on, so this is the costume I came up with.

I made the under-skirt, the tutu, and the furry arm and leg warmers. I upcycled the unicorn horn and tail, by I cutting them off of costumes I found at a thrift store. I also pseudomade my wings, I cut these off another costume and sewed wire through them so that I could shape them, then I sewed on the elastic supports. I also painted my shoes and nails to look rainbowey. Anyways, here's the costume Smiley

this is me with my sister, who also made her costume!

just for fun, here is a picture of my make up. this was my favorite part.

glorious glorious rainbow tutu. I need to find more excuses to wear this thing.

thanks for looking!!

9  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Darfur Matters: Women in Crisis- school project on: August 22, 2009 09:11:00 PM
Hi all,

I am a graduate student studying to receive my masters in social work. For a group project, we were supposed to do some sort of advocacy for an oppressed group. My fellow group members and I are passionate about the genocide in Darfur and the horrendous humanitarian crimes committed against women there. We decided to do passive advocacy by way of a large display board in the social work building. On it, we listed information about the things that are happening there (rape, genital mutilation, and oppression). We created a timeline of the political history in Darfur, personal stories of women affected by violence in Darfur, a series of facts and statistics, what needs to be done, and most importantly, what people can do to help create changes for these women.

I really enjoyed this because it was like a craft project disguised as school work!

Now...on to the pictures!!

I used my favorite fabrics on the timeline!

we made it interactive!
