i made this for my sister for christmas... it was pretty easy to do. the only thing that took a while was cutting out and sewing on the applique, but i used a machine so it wasn't too bad.
here is the bag:
and i will try my best to explain how to make it
post questions if you got 'em! step 1:
cut out 6 equally sized peices of fabric...
you will probably want 3 of these peices to match, as they will be the "outside peices" (front, back, and flap). the other 3 peices are just used for lining the insides and the flap. step 2:
what good is a purse without nice pockets?
i went a little pocket crazy, because i really like to have a lot.
sew these pockets onto your 2 peices of fabric that will line the inside of the bag. step 3:
sew your liner fabric to the two outside peices.
you might want to trim the edges after doing this if the edges don't line up just right. this is optional, though, as this will only show on the inside of the bag. step 4:
sew it up!
take the two pocketed peices and lay them on top of each other, pocket sides on the outside. sew this up on 3 sides, leaving the top open.
now turn it inside out, and you should have the baisic purse. you might want to iron it to make it flat. step 5:
cut and sew
cut out some pattern or something to sew on the flap. i used some flower material from the cheapie section at walmart. pin then sew it on.step 6:
line yer flap, matey! ( yar!)
i dont know?
alright.. take your beautiful appliqued flap and sew it to your other liner peice. right-sides in, and then turn it inside out. ive kind of learned to make bigger seams to make the flap a little smaller than the bag peices on the sides so it fits better. hold it up to your bag and see if it needs adjusting. you probably want to iron this peice so its nice and flat. then, sew it closed. step 7:
sew your flap to the inside of the bag. heres a picture of how all of mine came together. step 8:
add a long strap.
i used an old tie. size it to where you want and then sew it to the inside. step 9:
you have a stylin' new messenger bag! ...yay! i think that there are already several messenger bag tuts, but ive never really gotten to make a good tutorial, so i hope it helps someone!
