Your bentos look really nice. The potato korokke looks especially yummy too! I can't wait until it gets cooler so I can start enjoying bentos at the local Japanese Tea Gardens.  Grin
22  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: How to fix rusted cast iron skillet?? on: June 01, 2008 10:49:34 AM
I would use hot water and a scouring pad to get the rust off, then you need to re-season it.

Once the rust is cleaned off, dry it well with a paper towel or dish cloth and heat your oven to 250 - 300 degrees. Coat with lard or bacon grease (not liquid oil, I think vegetable shortening works for veg*s). Put in the oven for 15 minutes, drain off excess oil, then bake for 2 more hours. Seasoning several times makes the cast iron work better.

Also, here's a few tips I found that will help keep the cast iron working properly.

Clean the cookware while it is still hot by rinsing with hot water and scraping when necessary. Do not use a scouring pad or soap (detergent) as they will break down the pan's seasoning.

Never store food in the cast iron pan as the acid in the food will breakdown the seasoning and the food will take on a metallic flavor.

Store your cast iron cookware with the lids off, especially in humid weather, because if covered, moisture can build up and cause rust. Should rust appear, the pan should be re-seasoned.

24  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Re: one pan wonder - nachos on: May 27, 2008 10:54:12 AM
mmm this sounds good and easy. I like nachos too but I usually just use refried beans and soy cheese, so I'll have to try it your way next time.

Where did you order your cute box from?

I got it from the ebay store tokyo_gift and I recommend them because shipping was really fast (5 days from Japan to Texas).

28  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / cute little bento (edit:more bentos added) on: May 18, 2008 01:04:22 PM
I was inspired by acidtrix's topic about her first bento to take the plunge and get my own. So after scouring the internet for a couple days I came upon this.

The cutest bento box ever! So I had to get it. While I was waiting for it to come in the mail I bought another bento box but that's another story. Anyways, it came in yesterday so I had to make myself lunch!

On the left theres jasmine tea bags, a fortune cookie, and a mint.
On the right theres soy crisps, nori maki, a key lime, strawberries, grapes, and raspberries.
Since I got the other bento, I've been collecting accessories for it. So far I have small heart shaped cupcake baking cups (seen in the bento on the right), little cookie cutters, regular cupcake papers w/ stars on them and all kinds of little cute snacks. It's an addiction already.

Edit: I made a couple bentos last night for my friend and I. They're almost the same, but there's little differences because she's a picky eater. They both have mushroom flavor udon noodles, pan fried tofu, and yellow bell pepper and onions on the right layers and various fruits/berries on the left. Mine has blanched asparagus and she has pretzels and a fortune cookie.

Here's her bento

And here's mine
