1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Re: Celtic Wedding Ideas??? on: July 19, 2007 06:53:50 PM
My gm is Irish and at her wedding to my gf he gave her a coin (given to him by her father).  It is supposed to symbolize the groom sharing his fortune. I have the coin and I am going to use it on our wedding day this winter.  You can buy old Irish coins on Ebay all the time. :-)

Oh, a modern take on this is for the couple to exchange coins and if they clink as they pass it means you will have many children. :-)

No that's not cheesy at all!!  I wish I could remember the name of it!  It was so long ago but it was something like Paw Printz.

Oh. my. God.  That is the most awesome thing  I have ever seen!!!!!!!  I <3 it!!!  And I had been trying to think of a way to make film reels,  I hadn't even thought of bobbins!!!!!!  I like the idea of the faux filmstrip with Photoshop too.  That way I could put pictures of the two of us in there!!  Thanks so much guys!!!

A couple of ideas that have made money at the shelter I volunteer at are:

Animal art.  The humane society made a killing with this one!!  The had a bunch of local artists "collaborate" with shelter animals to make art.  It basically involved a lot of painting of paws (with non toxic paint of course!) and letting them walk across the canvas, the animals and artists both had a blast.  People paid much $$$$ for these paintings.  I wish I could remember the name of it, it had such a catchy title!  They also mounted a picture of the "artist" and their bio besides each piece.  It was held at a local art gallery and they made a real big deal out of it.

Another huge money maker is a straw raffle. This is so addictive!  You get a bunch of people to donate lots of little gifts, purses, felt stuffies,  gift certificates whatever.  Nothing has to be worth much!  Then make a bunch of little pieces of paper and write "Thank you for supporting blah blah blah please try again"  and on some pieces of paper write the names of prizes.  Cut regular drinking straws up (bright ones are most fun) and stick the pieces of paper in and pour all these in a fish bowl.  People use coffee stirrers to poke the paper out.  We charged .50 per straw.  I think we made over $100 on that in one day alone!!!  Which is quiet a bit considering how much we charged per straw!!

Also, a good way to get raffle prizes is to get one of the animal magazines, Dog Fancy, Cat Fancy or whatever.  Write a standard please support us we need donations of items and send them to ever advertiser in the magazine.  Its best to do this around the beginning of the year.  We received lots of prizes this way!!

Good luck!  Kudos to you for helping the animals!!!

I love the walk of stars idea!!! It doesn't have to be vintage film, I found some but its like $4 for 10 feet which would run into a lot of money for a bunch of bows!  I did find some old filmstrips on Ebay from classrooms and things.  I may try using some of those.  My mom is the designated bow maker in the family and she is already looking at me with fear in her eyes at the thought of making bows out of film!  Grin

Something a friend of mine did for her friend's baby (the dad was killed in Iraq Sad)  She asked for one of his old shirts and made a bear for the baby.  Its something the baby can snuggle now and later it will be a treasured memento, both of childhood and her dad.

I'm so sorry about your friend  Cry

This is too great!  There is already a stage there!!!  Its pretty cool too, the steps that go to the stage were taken from the farm where the horse Man-O-War lived!!!

Thanks for all the kudos on the theme!!!  We are having a blast with it!
