1  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: My new favorite hat! on: November 06, 2006 12:57:55 PM
Those are awesome! I'm on a hat kick myself . . . do you remember what the hat pattern was called? They have so many on there! And what yarn did you use (I know you said you used scraps but I'm curious 'cause I really like some of the colors!)?

Great job!

That is an ADORABLE dog - and VERY impressive for a first ami! And I think the "wonky"ness of the head makes it even more adorable. It looks so cute!

Thank you all for the comments and assistance!!

Part of the way through making the hat I started wondering I should just leave off the join (the chain 3 part) and do something else - so thanks funkyflower for letting me know what to do! It seemed no matter what I did at the join section (I tried making it REALLY tight, doing my slip stitch into it really tight, it was still all loose and funky lookin'!) it just wouldn't come out right.

I'm still very excited I made a hat and have been parading around my apartment in it - lol. I have some grey wool ease I'm going to try this pattern again with - although I'm going to do the brim differently. A grey hat would go perfectly with my coat and mittens I already have so I'm excited to make this one perfect and actually wear it around town! Smiley

Why do I babble so much? Lol.

Happy Crafting!

8  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / OH My Gosh - I actually finished something!! (My First Hat :) ) on: October 31, 2006 11:11:37 PM
I'm a chronic starter - not usually a finisher. I get bored mid-way and put things aside and don't complete them. But I actually did it this time! I made something I can wear even too!

Made from a pattern found here. I have a ton of Simply Soft sitting around though so I used that for yarn instead. This project was fast, probably could be done in one night if you're not a crochet noob like me Wink. Also, it was definitely a case of "keep going" - after the first 5 rounds or so I thought I wasn't doing it right because it didn't look like the pattern yet. Well, I just hadn't given it enough time. After some MORE rounds the pattern began to clearly show and I was very pleased.

Over all I'm happy. My first hat - and it wasn't just a simple SC in the round! And the only really ODD looking spot is where my joins were - I somehow messed it up, but it really doesn't look that bad.

I'm a picky perfectionist though so I see some things I don't like. I'm not sure I like the color changing - one solid color might have been nicer. And the bill didn't turn out how I wanted, mostly because I COMPLETELY messed it up (one [there is a bottom and a top part] was almost a half inch longer than the other, oops! - and instead of fixing it I just used it lol) - and I'm also not sure I like the bill with my face shape.

I will proudly wear this puppy around my apartment though Smiley. Plans are in the works already to use different yarn (I have some wool-ease that'd be yummy for this) and to do a few more rounds to make it a big longer, and to leave the bill off (which is easy enough to do). I'm definitely addicted to making hats now though. I've decided I NEED to have one with ear flaps so that's now on the to-do list too Wink

Just had to show off my first hat!! Sorry I babble so much Smiley

I love argyle too (you should see my socks! Wink ) so I just had to comment on the AWESOMENESS of this hat. It's really beautiful and the seam pattern you made looks great too.

I ALSO wanted to say the picture is awesome too. Great DOF - it looks like a magazine ad photo!

10  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Hat Help - Looking for Pattern on: October 29, 2006 12:49:12 PM
Hey Folks!

So I've been having a great weekend crocheting up a storm (hopefully will post pics soon!) and of course I got it into my head that I want to make a hat.

Now, I have a pretty nice looking hat pattern, but I really want to add a bill to it - a nice sturdy one like on baseball hats (only crochet/knit of course!).

Now I've spent, seriously, HOURS trying to find a pattern for a hat with bill, or how to add a bill, and can't find ANYTHING I really like.

Is there a general method for adding a bill? Does anyone know? I'm kind of thinking I'd like to knit it onto the crochet hat, the contrast in stitches would look nifty methinks. How do I do this though? I've never attempted to make anything without a pattern for each step - and though I think I can mess around with the bill myself to get it to my liking, I have NO idea how to put it on the hat without it looking loose or unnatural or whatnot . . .

Any help is appreciated!!
