721  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: Figure drawing wooden manequinn thing-a-ma-bobs... on: June 25, 2006 03:36:33 PM
Print gesture drawings or figure studies off the internet and collage them.  Or maybe paint them in flesh tones with faces, give them hair, and make clothes for them!

You could turn them in to a crazy ghoulish lamp by aranging them around a base of some sort, taking a piece of tubing or a dowel with a hole drilled through and catabolizing an old lamp for electronics.  The lampshade could be figure studies!

Maybe a t-shirt or handbag stenciled/silkscreened/iron-transfered with refferences to her favorite plays or movies.  Perhaps a purse shaped like an old movie camera or projector.  A stage-makup kit decorated to suit her tastes.  A feather boa and the soundtrack of Chicago.

Knit roses and give them out to your friends and relatives, passers by, bus drivers, cashiers, boss...
724  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Easy pirate sock ideas? on: June 25, 2006 01:17:56 PM
I'm a newbie knitter and was recently taught to knit in the round by my aunt.  I have a basic pile of flesh and have been wanting to knit socks.  My friend is taking advantage of this ambition and requesting  a pair of socks for her birthday.  She is turning 17 and has a eat for pirates.  I'm planning on decorating one of the many wooden boxes that my mom bought at a dollar store to look like a treasure chest (like some of those from the pirate unicorn zombie apocalypse gallary)

I don't know how to do intarsia or anything like that, but am willing to learn if it can be spelled out simply enough.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the wonderful world of crafting!  Trust me, you'll enjoy it.  I've seen resin used over collaged table tops to create a pretty glass-like finish that protects the images and looks more professional.  On top of that, you can add things of different thicknesses without worrying about a lumpy table.  I think it's two different liquids that you mix right before applying and you just pour it on, spread it, and let it level itself.  I'd ask at a hardware store, but I'm not sure where to get it.  Be careful, though, the fumes aren't too good for ya.

You spend an hour at a new stationary store just touching paper and your boyfriend doesn't laugh.

My sister just made a whole bunch of those heatable bags for her friends.  A skull and crossbones-shaped one, a bunny shaped one, some featuring Asian icons that I don't recognise.  They are adorable! You could make her one and pretty it up.

Also, I think red or black panties are a great idea! Try stenciling them with pics of tampons, chocolate bars, bottles of Pamprin, or anything else that has to do with menses.

You should also make her a little card that says "Happy Menarche!" with a pic of a uterus.  Speaking of uteri... http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTwomb.html I've been meaning to make one of these...

I brought my boyfriend to look at the alternative menstral product display at our local hippie store.  He was unfazed.  I eat that boy.

I haven't tried any re-usable products yet, but I intend to.  My sister swears by her diva cup.
