These are great!
2  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Internet Cross Stitch Sampler! on: January 19, 2010 07:59:39 PM
I'm totally going to do one of these, but with Dvorak and probably a few other adaptations since I like to tinker.

I am new-ish to K-W also and looking for other crafters but haven't really been successful in finding a group or meetup - anyone know of anything like this???  I mostly sew/reconstruct and bead although I have been trying (with mixed success) to get into knitting.

There are a bunch of them in the area that meet in different places at different times. They were set up as knitting groups but as far as I've seen anyone is welcome to work on any other craft there as well. I cross-stitch at the meetups more than I knit. Are you on Ravelry? The Waterloo and Wellington group on there keeps a page updated with all the meetup details. I'll quote what's on it now if you're not:

    * Purls of Puslinch meets at the Aberfoyle Community Centre on Hwy 46.
    * Third Thursday of the month, not during the summer.

The only ones I know of are Michael's, Cloth & Clay and Len's Mill Store. I use all three for various things. Micheal's for cross-stitch stuff, Cloth & Clay for Koigu and Regia, Len's Mills for the rest.

I'm waiting for my Louet Victoria to arrive. It won't be here until Friday (maybe Monday if the post office hates me) but I already know I'm going to love this wheel. Everything about it is perfect for what I want to do with it.

I'd love to! I'm on King & Ezra, so we could meet at UW somewhere since it's pretty central, if that's alright with you.

I don't have any free time until next week since I have my last exam in two days and have birthday plans this weekend. If you want to meet on weekends I can't until the 5th since I'm moving to Cambridge next weekend. But after that it's all good. I take the bus back and forth to Cambridge a lot, so it won't bother me at all to go the other way. I volunteer at WPL twice a week so I'll be playing on the bus a lot anyway.

Socks are difficult only if you try to understand them on the first go. When I learned I was at home with no internet and a sock pattern from the ball band of the yarn I was using. In several places I got confused and wondered if I was doing it right, but there was no one around to ask so I just followed the pattern to the letter and it worked.

Once I understood the basic construction I've been able to crank out socks from memory. They're really easy once you get through that first time.

Legwarmers are even easier, because they are just a long knitted tube. You can add stitch patterns or ruffles and such but the body of the thing is just knitting around in circles.

There's the Herrschner's on Victoria St. but they mostly sell acrylics and such, though they do have some wool and sock yarns that Michael's doesn't carry.

Knitwerx has a stall at the Farmer's Market in St. Jacobs. I've gotten Addi Turbos from them for $5 cheaper than anywhere else.

Oh, there's also Yarn Bird in Elora but I haven't been there yet.

I wouldn't worry too much. There isn't a club for crafts at UW but it's easy to start one.

http://www.feds.ca/clubs/

There's also a local knitting guild and a spinning guild, both within a 15-minute walk from either campus.

I'm willing to teach you any/all of it if you like.

I have a couple spindles that are definitely portable, and within a week I'll have a folding spinning wheel that is also extremely portable. I went with my spinning class to Wellington Fibres which is just outside of Elora and bought some roving there. Other than that I've purchased online. I like Crown Mountain Farms because they have a selection of very bright colourways that are named for songs from the '60s. and it's perfect for socks. I am addicted to knitting socks.

I'm graduating from WLU this June, and going to Western for grad school in September, hence why I won't be here after that. But I'll be living in Cambridge for the summer and volunteer in Waterloo, so I'll definitely be around.
