1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Empire-line dresses (+ bonus satin question!) on: March 05, 2008 10:13:49 AM
I found the most beautiful rainbow-coloured polyester satin in the fabric shop nearby, on half-price. I plan on using it to make a formal dress.

Thing is, the design I have in my head is this:

(excuse the wonk on the drawing) but I can't work out how to make it. Up to this point, I've only ever made separate tops and skirts, and the empire line stumps me. I've had a look for a pattern I can use as a starting point, but can't see anything. Can anyone suggest one, or a way to make this? I just don't know where to start.

The other question is - the satin is quite thin, but heavy as anything. Would this style of skirt (A-line ish) hang right? I have visions of me finally making the thing, trying it on and finding it sticks out like a triangle! Thanks.
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Sweet, non-overwhelming birthday gift for male friend... on: January 29, 2008 08:22:26 PM
(Whoo, lurker crawling out of the woodwork...)

I have a close male friend - one of 3 people I could say I'm really *friends* with, as opposed to just friendly. I thought his birthday was April 11th, for some reason. I just looked it up to confirm it, and whoops - it's on February 11th. Undecided

He's one of those people who seems to have everything - except self-confidence. He wrote very nice letters to his friends at Christmas, thanking them for what they do and for making him feel appreciated and valued because he doesn't always feel like he should be. I write novels in my spare time, and he's incredibly encouraging, provides me with a much-needed male insight, proofreads them, gives them to friends and family to read as well, and tells me what I'm doing well and what he likes about them. The best gift I could think of was self-publishing my first completed work on Lulu.com, dedicated to him, and giving him a copy with a bookmark stuck in the dedication page - I'm not trying to be arrogant when I say that's the best gift I could think of, I mean I really want him to see how much I appreciate everything he does for me. No way am I going to be able to get it done for the 11th though. Sad

He's what I believe is termed a 'metalhead' - long hair, beard, lots of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. Appearances aside however, he is about as threatening as a marshmallow. Smiley

It sounds silly, but it would be easier if we were dating. He's got a girlfriend though, so I have to be careful with 'sentimental' and meaningful gifts - I don't want to be accused of trying anything. Sigh. I don't have access to a sewing machine and I can't knit/crochet, but I can embroider, I can bake, and I can do papercrafty things. There are loads of things I COULD do, but I'm really struggling to find something that shows what an absolute angel I think he is and how much I appreciate everything. Any thoughts?...
