There was a little girl, whose home was not safe. There was a little girl who would hide in the corner while her mother and father fought, with words, with fists, with weapons. There was a little girl who cried when the police came, thinking she was going to be put in jail for making her parents fight....and only stopped when the policeman knelt down to her level and handed her a pink teddy bear. It was soft, it had a heart stitched onto one ear and had sparkles interspersed in the fur. She smiled cautiously through her teary eyes when the policeman told her "you'll be ok now, you'll always have your friend, who loves you" as he scooped her up to take her to a safe place.
During the toy drive over Christmas, I learned that when police go domestic violence calls where children are involved, they often bring a bear to help the kids deal with the intensity of the situation they are in. I hadn't known this previously and it touched me in a very real way. So, as I read through all of the various projects that are in action among fellow knitters, I noticed a deficiency. There were very few projects where the items were for people within the United States and Canada, there were very few projects for kids, and there were none for the specific purpose that I had in mind for mine.
Project Snuggle- A project of knitted bears for police to take to child victims of domestic violence. Simple, really yet so very absent in the world of charitable knitting. Why am I telling you? Also simple...I need your bears! Knit, sewn, felted, furry, fuzzy snuggleable. These bears will dispersed within different police departments within the US to begin with. It will start in my home base of Phoenix, and hopefully we can expand to different stations nationwide, and perhaps into Canada. Want to help a kid through a rough time? Craftsters Unite.
There are only small requirements I have for the bears. No small parts which can be easily swallowed, buttons, bobbles etc (so faces must either be handstitched, or painted on) and each bear must have a tag that says "from your friend, (your name)". Bears must be handmade, no store-bought donations, please.
