1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Autumn Fashion Swap on: August 10, 2010 08:23:22 AM
I adore the new trends for Autumn/Winter 2010, and I think they have more craft potential than most seasons, which frankly sounds like a challenge to me. Yes, we all could run out and buy a pair of Prada socks (oh wait, no we all couldn't), or we could have a stab at making something similar (better).

I'm really inspired by the whole mixed-textures, country and military trends: with chunky socks, lots of layered knits, sheep skin, khaki, velvet, mittens (thank goodness for mittens), leather in a whole mix of browns, greens, greys and other earthy tones.

I particularly liked elements of the following shows:
Prada (socks!!)
Topshop Unique
Burberry

Things like the socks and mittens would be craft-able, but I think lots of other bits and bobs could be done as well - for instance making felted bracelets or lamb-themed jewellery to hint at sheep skin, military buttons to adorn brooches or hair accessories.. or just using the general colour scheme.

There are plenty of other inspiring trends in case not everyone has precisely the same taste in fashion as me. I've seen a fair amount of 1950s inspired, groomed outfits, and loads of very glamorous, sleek black things about, as well as more grungy takes on it too. Lots of incredible embroidery too!

Vogue has a an A to Z of what they think are the AW10 trends right here.

Anyways, I'll stop prattling on! What do you think?

I'm happy to organise, but only after the 2nd of September, as I'm currently writing a dissertation, and I won't get it done if I start crafting things!

I'm a bit obsessed with Alice and the universe Lewis Carroll invented for her... actually I'm a bit obsessed with Lewis Carroll too.

There have been at least two previous Alice in Wonderland swaps, and a Dark Side of Wonderland one too... all have been successful and in my opinion rather wonderful.

So, who would be up for something similar? The two books, and the various interpretations and off-shoots over the years, allow so much scope for crafting!

Obviously there is the original book and the Disney film for starters... and the many other film and animated versions... plus there are tea parties, Frank Beddor's
Looking Glass Wars and Seeing Red, Jeff Noon's Automated Alice, Lewis Carroll himself, Alice Liddell and Oxford, music and art inspired by the story and the various theories about what the book means (I've heard various philosophical theories, and plenty of drug centred ones).

Wonderland can be bright and innocent, or dark and stange - there is plenty of potential for Wonderland to be whatever you want to be, whether you are just familar with the Disney film or whether you've seen the Opera, ballet and many adaptions like me.

So, who would be up for it?

I'll set the Jabberwocky on you if you aren't enthusiastic enough Smiley

Our lovely organiser dragonmama has suggested we have sign ups from October 25 to November 7 and send outs December 8.

If there is a great public out cry against those dates then there may be flexibility, but thats what we're working to at the moment. Let dragonmama (or myself) know if there are any problems.

5  QUILTING / Quilting: Discussion and Questions / Wadding/Batting recommendations on: July 24, 2008 07:04:06 AM
Hello there,

I'll admit it, this isn't directly related to quilting, but I thought this was the best board to post about wadding.

I have a rather strange request, or rather a quite normal request with rather strange reasoning's. A couple of weeks ago I was in the Vivienne Westwood (is Vivienne Westwood famous outside of the UK?) exhibition in Sheffield and was inspired by her collection entitled Nostalgia of Mud. The collection uses lots of lovely textures and murky, atmospheric colours - not to everyone's tastes but totally enchanting for me. Several outfits in this collection have overskirts supported by huge underskirts made of wadding (instead of tulle etc), and the wadding is dyed to fit in with the colour scheme.

Now, I'm pretty inspired by this and come autumn I would love to be stepping out in a similar thing - however all the wadding I have found so far is polyester, which is famously tricky to dye, so I was wondering if any of you would be able to recommend any (quite thin) wadding that is made of cotton or some other such easily dyed material!

I suppose I'm looking for pretty sturdy wadding, stuff that isn't going to fall apart just from a bit of friction and gravity.

Obviously UK stocked brands would be ideal but through the joys of eBay and international shipping I'm happy to welcome all suggestions! This beggar isn't a chooser, especially as I'm a non-quilting beggar!

Many thanks in advance

The survey all participants need to fill out is below, but first have a read of what this swap is all about!

The Back to Nature Swap is an opportunity for craftsters to celebrate how wonderful the natural world is. This is quite a wide ranging topic, so it would mean quite a bit of partner communication, but could include lots of things from Gaia and the Green Man to natural cosmetics and natural fibres, from natural art and landscape photography to organic recipes and tips/aids to living a life less impacting on the environment (reusable bags etc). It can be a bit spiritual or simply practical.

There are more ideas and discussion in the original thread http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=225249.0

The swap parcels should include:
 - 1 Large or 2 Medium items
 - 4 small items

Small variations on this can of course be discussed between partners - just as long as everyone is happy!

Some ideas that were suggested in the pre-sign-ups thread are listed below:
 - Items made from natural fibres/fabrics, i.e. natural yarn gloves etc.
 - Natural cosmetics
 - Items incorporating natural things - shells, polished wood etc.
 - Recycled items, ie journals from paper already printed on one side, reusing old buttons, clothes etc.
 - Yarn spun in natural colours
 - Fabrics/yarn dyed with natural dyes
 - Reusable items, nappies, cleansing clothes, tea bags, shopping bags to help maintain the natural world
 - Herbal teas
 - Seeds and instructions for growing them
 - Literature/poetry/quotes inspired by nature
 - Anything inspired by nature really, for instance landscape bookmarks, skirts etc, Flower motifs, tree silhouette t-shirts.
- Things to help others enjoy nature more, wellies (or light weight sandals for those who prefer to go barefoot to carry easily, in case of glass/gravel), pouches to collect finds in, cases for compasses, thermos flasks etc.
 - Jewelery based on organic shapes
 - Recipes using wild/organic food

For inspiration I always find searching Etsy for key words helps (although I would encourage you to use this for inspiration only, and always credit if you take more than just inspiration from someone else's idea) and I also find the work of Andy Goldsworthy and Rob Plattel very inspiring when it comes to Environmental Art - Google them, its worth a look. For further inspiration, well get outside!

I will be looking for a co-organiser if the swap is particularly popular  (over 20) - so any volunteers are welcome!

Also its worth pointing out I am UK based and so all dated/times will be in BST, and that I will be asking for proof of postage from everyone - even if its just a receipt from the Post Office.

The questionnaire is pretty long, feel free to miss any questions you wish from the General Questions and Swap Specific Questions Sections if you are pressed for time. However, the more information the better and if I feel some one hasn't provided enough information I will ask for some more before accepting them.

9  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Blue and Silver birdy earrings - First attempt on: March 26, 2008 01:55:09 PM
Hello,

I made these recently for my cousins 18th birthday, they aren't really my style (I'm more into this sort of thing, much less sleek and simple) but I throughly enjoyed making them, even if it did take me three hours. Two and a half hours for the first one, half an hours for the second!

They are made from blue and clear glass droplet beads (from ebay, where else?) joined into a chain-like formation of split rings and jump rings to give them a nice dangley look. I also added a tiny little silver bird charm to each, because otherwise I feel they would have been just a bit too plain quite frankly.

Anyways I hope you like my first attempt at actually making earrings, feel free to comment, or not Smiley

Thanks
Kenners
10  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / A Natural, or Back to Nature swap? on: February 04, 2008 09:28:48 AM
<pre-ramble>
So, on the way to work every morning I pass a field which has recently transformed itself from its wintery emptiness into a late winter, snow drop scattered wonder. Its been looking fantastic, especially in the crisp, clear, sunny mornings we've been having in Oxford recently.

Anyways, seeing the snowdrops and the beginnings of the daffodils and crocus has just made me want it to be that little bit warmer, so I can wander about in the grass in my bare feet, have cups of tea in the garden watching the natural world change and just generally spend more time outside. Basically I'm looking forward to getting back to the natural world a bit more now its warming up and getting a bit lighter in the evenings.
</pre-ramble>

Anyways, this all inspired me to see if anyone would be interested in a 'Back to Nature' swap... I'm not talking Naturalists or Nudists here (not necessarily anyways...), but a swap based around how wonderful the natural world is, and how we could enjoy/use it more in our everyday lives.

This is quite a wide area, so it would mean quite a bit of partner communication, but could include lots of things from Gaia and the Green Man to natural cosmetics and natural fibres, from natural art and landscape photography to organic recipes and tips/aids to living a life less impacting on the environment (reusable bags etc). It can be a bit spiritual or simply practical, anything would go really!

My ideas so far include:

Items made from natural fibres/fabrics, i.e. natural yarn gloves etc.
Natural cosmetics
Art/decorations inspired by nature (afterall, everyone loves a good tree silhouette)
Items incorporating natural things - shells, polished wood etc.
Maybe a disposable camera (disposable cameras don't really fit with the low impact idea, but its just an idea) full of pictures of natural things/landscapes etc, that your partner can develop.
Recycled items, ie journals from paper already printed on one side, reusing old buttons, clothes etc.
Yarn spun in natural colours
Gloves that look like ivy covered bark
Reusable items, nappies, cleansing clothes, tea bags, shopping bags to help maintain the natural world
Herbal teas
Seeds and instructions for growing them
Literature/poetry/quotes inspired by nature
Anything inspired by nature really, for instance landscape bookmarks, skirts etc, tree t-shirts.
Things to help others enjoy nature more, wellies (or light weight sandals for those who prefer to go barefoot to carry easily, in case of glass), pouches to collect finds in, cases for compasses, thermos flasks etc.

It probably all sounds a bit airy-fairy and hippy-ish, but I think with such a wide theme there is something to suit most people, and certainly loads of potential!

Would anyone be interested in this sort of swap?
