71  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re:Making rips in jeans? on: May 05, 2004 03:00:31 PM
I cut a bunch of slits into the knees of my first pair of ripped jeans, and then washed them to wear at the holes.  The holes got worn in over time.  On my more recent pair of ripped jeans, I rubbed sandpaper over and around the knees - it did a pretty good job, plus the wear around the holes made it look like more realistic wear.  And on both pairs, the holes at the knees have expanded a little bit over time (the former pair more than the latter).
Meanwhile, my pair of jeans that I wear when I'm building stuff or working in the forge remain unripped.  Stained, yes, but whole.  Hmm.
72  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Mother's Day / Re:What are you making your Mum for mothers day?? on: May 05, 2004 02:48:27 PM
After making a frantic run around my area to find a place that carried colored duct tape...I'm making my mom a bouquet of duct tape flowers.  They're really silly, but hey, that's the kind of stuff you get when your kid's a geek. ;p

There are some  photos of them in http://web.mit.edu/luminea/Public/duct-tape-flowers... I apologize for the not-so-great quality of the pics, but I've got finals I should be studying for right now, hehe.
73  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Re:Calling ALL Power Tool Chicks! on: May 05, 2004 10:28:21 AM
Color me a newbie, and I'm a total power tool fiend!

I've got a stash of tools under my bed, including a dremel and a power drill (and a circ saw coming to me for my birthday) as well as their non-powered kindred.

I'm also a blacksmith and a silversmith, so I've got a collection of tools for that, and access to a forge and a foundry.  Mmm...I love the resonance of a good anvil.  I think I get to learn to weld this summer, too - I'm very excited!
