181  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / The 22 year long scrap quilt project... on: February 07, 2010 03:32:14 PM
Ok, I've been working on this thing for what seems like forever now and I think I'm finally, finally finished.
I started collecting bits of fabric for a quilt when I was 16 and finally had enough and some time to stitch it up after about, oh 12 or so years  Tongue. After all that work though I just didn't much like it so I passed it along to my mom and it lived at the cottage for many years until she started clearing out old stuff and asked me if I wanted it back. Ok, I thought, maybe I can fix this thing up. It was just so big, a queen at least, so I took off the borders (HOURS of seam ripping), stitched and patched up holes, added some piping and put it back together again. After what seems like a very, very long time (because it WAS!) it's a quilt again, the perfect size for the back of our couch and I absolutely love it. It's not precisely pieced together so it's far from perfect but all those squares from old clothes and projects, it's like a memory treasure hunt every time I look at it.

I was in love with my serger way back then and that's how I originally put the squares together. Of course many seams didn't last (duh) so I patched them up with interesting bits of flannel and ribbon.

Here is the back, it's a very soft, fluffy fleecey fabric that's perfect to cuddle under on the couch on a chilly night.
182  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Oh So 70's rainbow latch hook pillow. on: February 07, 2010 02:08:06 PM
Who knew latch hook took so danged long to do?! Whew, after over 10 hours here it is. I kinda like it and it looks good on the couch with our other weird crafty pillows.

After all that though this is the side the kids like best. The one that took about 20 minutes. Go figure... Tongue

183  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Discussion and Questions / Need ideas for 3 boys, ages 7 14 and 16 :) on: February 07, 2010 06:15:35 AM
My friends just had a baby and I have a gift all finished but before I send it off I wanted to include something for the other boys too. Now that I am ready to start crafting for them I find myself short of ideas. I thought I'd ask you crafty parents and see if you've got a little inspiration for me. I hope you do, I can't think of much. Maybe some custom stencilled t-shirts, or is that lame? Their interests are:
7 year old, Wolverine and Kung Fu
14 Starwars and WW2
16 Beatbox, Beatmaker.

Anything?

Thanks!
184  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Really terrible thrift store sweater into cute winter gear. on: February 06, 2010 07:24:06 AM
Based on a tutorial I saw on threadbanger once. I'd probably do this one again, the mitts fit great but it's hard to get the shape right on this kind of hat. I might crochet a cap and applique some of the piano keys onto it.

Ugly, ugly sweater that no one would ever actually wear.

Not so bad mitts and hat for my musical mama. Kinda cute!

186  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Punk Rock Sock! on: January 30, 2010 12:23:44 PM
A friend had a baby, I promised them a fun gift. What better for the child of a hardcore punk rock band lead singer than a punk rock sock monkey? Here he is in all his hardcore cuteness...

Double stitched limbs, tail, facial features and safety eyes backed with strong fabric inside the head to stand up to rough lovin' by his new best friend. Hope they like him, my kids sure did!

187  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Another kid drawing comes to life! on: January 30, 2010 11:31:45 AM
My little dude is the best. I made him a monster stuffy last week and he decided to make one for me,  Kiss so sweet. He needed me to cut out the fabric so he drew out each piece individually and colour coded. Well, what do you know, there were TWENTY THREE pieces! Holy mac. He and me, we'll have to work on his definition of a simple project! I had to stitch it up for him too, lol.

Here's the darling little Softie Monster

And her little monster teddy friend's backside (photos a bit blurry, sorry! Hard to take shots of such wee little thangs).

The accompanying note says:

"Surprise! Surprise!
I hope you like her.
Her name is Softie and her
little teddy bear's name is Sun."

His detailed sketch. Not sure what's up with that one black eye, when it came time to choose he picked out what's on the final product. I think he was considering one button eye. We recently watched Coraline so maybe he was going for only half creepy evil and half cute and loving.
188  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Wee little beaded spirit doll on: January 27, 2010 10:43:04 AM
Cute and fun. So much detail and labour for something so teeny weeny though, whew! Hard to photograph too...
189  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Purple Monkey on: January 27, 2010 10:37:57 AM
Something for the little girl. Many thanks to Craftewoman for all her wonderful posts on needle sculpting, this was my first attempt and there isn't an excessive amount but it worked so well to create the nose and give definition to the cheeks. mouth, chin and head shape. And tons of thanks to the girls in the poppet thread, so much inspiration and info on pattern drafting and creation, it really helped me to draft the pattern for this and put it all together. She's got a bum and belly button Wink.
