I've had this coffee table for many years - it was a hand-me-down. Nice, white marble. But it cracked!!

I had to remove the marble and now the table has a sad, unfinished top. It appears to be stained, but it's not smooth or varnished. I could just sand it, stain it, and finish it - but that would be so boring!

So my question to you, fellow crafsters, is what the heck can I do with this coffee table that is not too expensive, baby-friendly, and would look fabulous!!?? (tall order, I know)
I thought about getting a piece of plywood and stapling some foam and fabric on top. That would be baby-friendly, but not fabulous. An idea my husband had was to get a nice piece of rounded glass to put on top and place pictures underneath. I immediately took it one step further and had grand ideas about creating a collage right on top of the table, but I've
never done a collage before. I wouldn't even know how to approach it! Also, where does one get a nice, piece of glass. I sort of doubt it would fit into my inexpensive criteria

.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
