1  I'm finally done! Two hand-tufted fabric scrap rugs in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General by nat_attack on: November 30, 2009 07:54:49 PM

teaser pic...

Ok so I havent posted anything to Craftster in a loong time, I have been so busy with school! I am getting a BFA degree in textiles, and for one of my classes this semester we did a rug tufting project. Tufting involves using a tufting gun to insert fabric strips or yarn between holes onto a backing fabric and makes loops on one side of the fabric. It's similar to hooking rugs.

here is a link that explains it better : http://www.erug.com/learnrugs/learn_detail/weave/lrn_weave_tufted.htm

and here is a diagram of a tufting tool: http://flooringamericatville.com/rugs/handtufted.gif

I chose to do my rug project based off of early Southern American quilts. I live in Georgia and quilting has quite a history here! I did a lot of research and ended up writing a paper about it in another class. I wanted to emulate those women making the quilts, who maybe didn't have the resources to buy all new fabric and used what they had- old clothes, scraps, feed sacks, etc.

The rugs are tufted with hand-cut fabric strips, I cut up all my old clothes that didn't fit anymore. It was a LOT of work, cutting the strips took almost as much time as tufting the rugs did! I would estimate that about 100 hours of work went into each of these rugs. Except for the backing fabric (I used burlap), I, proud to say the rugs are made of all recycled materials!

Ok enough backstory... here are the pictures!

the first rug i made, it is a little over three feet square (About a meter sqaure)

each sqaure was done on a frame and then sewn together, here is one sqaure finished and taken off the frame and one frame stretched and ready to go!

I backed it with an old bedsheet and embroidered my name and the year in the middle

Here is the second rug i made, it is about the same size as the first

all the squares not sewn together yet!

one tufted square... front...

... and back!

EDIT: here are more pictures of the tufting tool:

a tufted sqaure, the tufting tool is at the bottom with the fabric strip threaded through

here is the tufting tool, i was being silly so ignore my face Tongue

I hope you enjoyed my post, comments and criticism welcome! I go to present it tomorrow in class, then I will be done with school for the winter break!

2  Re: Birds birds birds Swap Gallery in The Swap Gallery by nat_attack on: September 18, 2009 06:51:33 AM
I received from Smmarrt on Monday... and here it is Friday and I haven't put up pics yet!   Undecided  So here they are... Smmarrt absolutely spoiled me with all these extras!  Everything is so well crafted and awesome, she is amazing! The pictures dont really do the items justice, it's been so rainy here I was forced to take crappy pictures inside with teh flash instead of outside in the light like I usually do.

first up are the postcards/notecards and birdie stickers

the first main item... this absolutely adorable stuffie!!!  The fabrics are so cool and they go very well together, this lil guys is so cute!!!

i like the loooong legs:

some more extras... craft/cookie cutters in bunny and bird shapes!

she used her own set of cutters to make these clay bird ornaments/pendants and she sent me a bag of wooden bird and egg shapes as well!

love the chicken stamped notepad.... she stamped every page!

but the main event is this gorgeous, beautiful, wonderful apron!

it is so well made! the tie is made of this wonderful batik print fabric, and the bird fabric is almost like a vinyl texture... seems easy to wipe clean. it is a craft apron, i will use it to hold my scissors and things but it will never see glue or anything messy!!  Tongue

all my goodies together!

this swap was amazing, thank you so much Smmarrt for spoiling me, I hope you liked your package as much as I loved mine!!!!

4  Re: Show Off Your Hair! in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by nat_attack on: August 16, 2009 12:51:51 PM
I got frustrated with my loooooong hair the other day... its way too hot and humid in GA right now to be messing with hair down to the middle of my back!!! I had at it with the clippers and some crappy scissors, and it turned out surprisingly not too bad!!

It took me soooo long because I didnt have the balls to just hack it all off, so I trimmed a little bit at a time Tongue

I went from this:

to this (halfway through):

to this!:

I hadnt cut it for a year and half so my long hair was all split ends and just generally annoying. I love this cut, now that I can cut my own hair I am going to save sooo much money Tongue

I recently participated in the 4th round of the Chunky Houses Swap... I only had to make 4 houses but I ended up making a whole neighborhood! I cut out house shapes from cardboard for the bases and used scrapbooking paper, old books, and other ephemera and Mod Podge to decoupage the houses.

Here are the houses!
