1  Cat Puppet in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by practicecactus on: December 12, 2009 08:42:38 PM
Hullo again ladies, I finished another puppet. Took me ages to do, mainly due to it all being hand sewn, and made a second foam head for him cause the first one didn't move comfortable enough, but my scruffy little feline is all done.
His name is Jimmy Boots.

Pics of the build process Here.

very cute, I'm sorry if this has already been asked but how do you control his eyelids?

The eyelids are moved with the ring/lever, moved by the middle rude finger. Index, ring and pinky fingers are in a hand grip, so they don't move and unfortunately, as seen in the pic, it's an opposite movement, so when you move the middle finger up the eyelids come down. I really tried to make in in the same direction but the set up I used was because of the placement of the eyes and hand and the limited space to work with. It's pretty tight in there.
I stretched some fleece type material over some balls, and used art fixative to stiffen it, to make the red eyelids.
Tried to make it as simple as I could, but simplicity is sometimes a huge pain in the arse to achieve.

Hullo Ladies, thought I'd post my new Gerald Puppet in an effort to visit this fine forum more often and also just cause everyone loves puppets.
This is my updated version of my Gerald puppet, as seen in this thread. Updated and improved a lot of things I have learned about puppet making, and he was getting worn out due to my..umm, relaxed attitude toward storing him, ie; throwing him on my bedroom floor.

I made a proper sculpted foam skull for him and gave him an improved eyeblink. The angle of his eyelids was a pain in the arse to do the mech, but after three or four attempts I ended up with a comfy reliable mech.

Wire skeleton in the hands for posability, and removable arm rods.
The hand grips inside the head are covered with leather for comfort and also cause the hand tends to sweat a bit inside a foam head covered with fake fur, so those offcuts of leather I nicked from a bin where I used to work, came in very handy..so to speak.
Few more pics of the process Here.

I wasn't sure where to put this.. Reusing/Recycling/Rrecrafting... Paper Crafts? *shrugs*

I might shorten his forearms. Or I might light him on fire..we'll see how bored I get.

I wouldn't use to gauge it's size cause I have small girlish hands.

I reckon he looks like Lee Marvin.

Shoe for scale.

So there ya go. I was gonna make a cardboard sculpture, but the pile of Toilet paper rolls piling up in the bathroom inspired me.

I'm sick of the BS that goes on a particular puppetry forum and I figure this is the place to find better info on construction on this sorta thing anyway.
Not sure if it fits in here or anything.

So this is the second puppet I've ever made and he has blinking eyes.
Thought you might like it.

Now, being a guy, I've never sewn in my life so I had to learn as I went. It sucks.
[photoshopped out his arm rods and fixed his gaze in that last one ..shhh]
I've made a couple of youtube vids with him and gave him his own Myspace.
