21  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Victorian gown, image heavy! on: April 23, 2011 05:07:01 PM
I used Truly Victorian patterns for all three components - bustle petticoat, skirt and jacket. I did a post a while back when I had finished the petticoat and skirt - it is here if you're interested! http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=352905.0
I ended up with a different corset as foundation, a demibust for the better fit with the period shaped jacket.

Patterns are
TV101 bustle petticoat
TV216 1875 Parisian Trained skirt (as pattern except I added detail on the side panels)
TV405 1972 Vest Basque (modified to lower neckline, changed collar, omitted cuffs, pointed center front)

Please to be ignoring the derp poses!

Just FYI, this is the makeup tutorial I used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04V8qyMtrrM&feature=related
22  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Refinishing t-shirt hems on: January 10, 2011 12:56:45 PM
It's sewn quite cose to the pressed edge, which I guess is the problem.
I think in future I'd leave a larger allowanceand tack it with that wonder hem tape stuff and sew it as well.

That's what I did, as I said in my post.

If she's a size ten in regular US clothes, you'll need more like a size 14 in patterns Smiley

That said, the dress is lovely! She's very lucky!
25  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: how to ruche or scrunch ribbon? on: January 01, 2011 10:45:50 AM
I've done this using a little piece of elastic - stretch the elastic as you sew, but not the ribbon, use a zigzag stitch. It looks lovely Smiley
26  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Can someone help me with this skirt? on: December 31, 2010 03:13:53 PM
You can do it two ways. One is using a an a-line underskirt that is plain with a more voluminous overskirt, and using staggered ties on the outside of the liner and the inner of the overskirt to 'pick up' the fabric in various places. The other is the same but you permanently sew the pick-ups.

This Burdastyle one pulls the fabric up quite tight, but it's the same technique - yours would just be a bit looser: http://www.burdastyle.com/techniques/pick-up-skirt-technique

This is a costume one but it's fully lined and whatnot. I'm in the process of making it now:

Take it back and get the size that matches you - you'll be very frustrated otherwise!
29  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Refinishing t-shirt hems on: December 31, 2010 03:02:52 PM
Hey Craftsters,
A few weeks back I reconned a Joker t-shirt just to nip it in a bit and make it less manly. I gave the lower hem a scoop finish, and serged, pressed it up and stitched with a twin needle. It looks great except that the hem wants to roll out all the time and it's doing my head in. Any suggestions?

Ta!
