1  Handspun Ski Headband in Knitting: Completed Projects by Jillie on: July 07, 2008 10:39:12 PM

I made this headband out of my handspun yarn.  It's 3" wide and 20" around (stretches to fit my 24" head).  It's knit as a rectangle in stockinette stitch with a slipped edging, and the ends are grafted together.

Here is the yarn before being knit up, it's a 2 ply bulky weight spun from a black and white striped roving.

It took me about three hours to spin the yarn, an hour to ply it, and two hours to knit the headband.

Hope you like it!  I'd be happy to answer any questions Smiley

3  Your Fiber Stash in Spinning: Discussion and Questions by Jillie on: November 21, 2007 10:21:18 AM
This is the first time I've ever had a stash!  I went to a needlecraft convention last weekend and picked up some pretty fiber to work with.

1 oz Colonial top in Slate  (I love this stuff, so soft, so nice, and easy to spin!)

1 oz Colonial top in Koala

30 silk cocoons (about 1/2 oz)

"Mystery Roving" I ordered from ebay ages ago.  Can't remember what it is, any help identifying it would be great!

So show me your beautiful stash of fiber!

4  Re: Show Off Your Hair! in Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects by Jillie on: November 20, 2007 10:58:12 PM

I've been experimenting with shorter hair lately, tonight I decided it was time for another cut...

It's long on top, short on the sides/back.  Sort of a really wide mohawk.

Now, my problem is, since I had red hair with brown roots, I cut off the red on the sides.  So I'm kind of unintentionally two-toned.  But there's not much I can do about that at two in the morning, so I can just claim it's orange and brown for Thanksgiving.   Wink

This is the first time I've seen my natural color in about eight years!  I kind of forgot what it looked like...

6  Scrubs Name Badge in Halloween Costumes by Jillie on: October 30, 2007 09:50:01 PM
A friend of mine is being JD from Scrubs, so I Photoshopped him a name badge!

Feel free to print and use yourself, I know a lot of people do Scrubs costumes.

You can "laminate" it with packing tape or contact paper.

7  Re: "What do YOU Journal About?!" Ideas thread! in Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions by Jillie on: October 26, 2007 04:38:54 PM
Thought I'd scan a few more pages to share  Smiley

I love to build things.  When I come up with a concept for something new, it gets sketched out on a page.  This is a steampunk-inspired lamp.

Here's a completed "Directory of Beautiful Things" page.  I try to write these down whenever I see them, but sometimes there's just too many to record.  I'm available for handwriting translation  Wink

If I'm short on creativity but think something might be useful later, I'll draw/trace it.

Taking a few notes on a building concept

That's all for now.

8  Re: Making Your Own Corset? in Clothing: Discussion and Questions by Jillie on: October 25, 2007 02:20:48 AM
I was in the process of making a corset last year when my measurements changed drastically and it no longer fit.  Since I don't have a sewing machine, I didn't really feel like taking it all apart and doing it over.

I randomly came across it in my sewing bin today and decided to try it on for fun.  Lo and behold, it almost fits!  I still need to take it in a bit, but I guess I gained some weight in the last year.

So now I'm going to finish it up, which is mostly finishing the embellishment, but I also need to fix the back, since there's a little bit of fraying and it's not straight.  I also want to get better laces, the ones I have seem to stretch out when I pull them instead of tightening as much as I'd like.

Pictures:

What it looked like before, I added more boning to the front to fix the crease, and you can tell it looks too big:

9  Re: Magknits Rainbow Socks KAL in Knitalongs by Jillie on: October 21, 2007 10:07:00 PM
So this stupid thing is making no sense to me, and I'm devising a way of my own to make a similar-looking short row sock.  Currently swatching flat to see how it turns out, then I'll try doing it on an actual sock and see how THAT goes.

I'll keep you posted!  And I'll post the pattern when it's done.

Edit:  Did my swatch in the new pattern!

Looks just like the original, which is what I was going for!

And did the basic math for the sock pattern:

Gauge:  27 sts= 3.5 inches

Foot circumference: 10 inches

Sock circumference: 76 stitches, 9.8 inches

Cast on 38 stitches for short-row toe.

My hair was getting way too long and hanging in my face, so it was time for another DIY haircut... plus I wanted to see how it would look really short.

Before (I look like a Beatle!):

After:

It's not my favorite, I think it makes me look a little too butch.  Thinking about putting some bright colored highlights in it to liven it up a bit, though.

What colors do you think would look good with the color I already have?
