31  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Doctor Who and Spinoffs Round 5 (Sendouts 30 October) on: October 06, 2009 05:27:01 AM
I've started craftin'. I think my "small" item will end up being the most challenging!

LOVE Richard Scarry! I totally recognized the worms from the thumbnail.

I always liked finding the pickle in every picture when I was a kid!

34  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Doctor Who and Spinoffs Round 5 (Signups end 9/28; 3 DAYS LEFT!!!) on: September 25, 2009 05:37:51 PM
Duuuudes I was just google-ing Torchwood to get ideas, and the frickin' search results had a MAJOR spoiler from Children of Earth (which I have not seen yet) and I got sooo mad >:-(

Lesson learned: no more skimming search results until I am caught up on a show.

Sorry to complain, I just thought you guys would feel my pain! Arrrrrgh I need brain bleach so I can forget and be surprised!!

Just sent in my questionnaire. Ooooh yay! I feel all giddy just thinking of the fun we're gonna have with this, ladies. :-)

Olive_juice, thanks for putting this together. I've been wanting to do a Who swap for a while now...

36  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Re: tired of the sexy-everything costumes? on: September 16, 2009 01:05:52 PM
I read this whole thread cuz it fascinated me, but I was surprised no one posted this hilarious video yet that is EXACTLY what everyone is talking about here. It's called "Girl's Costume Warehouse" and it had me in tears I was laughing so hard! (WARNING adult language)

Anyway I am going to agree with Paralax when she says Halloween is a fun time for (adults) to push boundaries, including sexual ones. That said, I have a LOT more respect for someone who goes DIY and is clever about their sexy costume than someone who just goes for the random sexy pantyhose + very short dress thing.

I've def done a couple of "sexy" costumes in my day (Poison Ivy from Batman, 20s flapper...) and might do one again this year. I'm in my mid-20s and fit: it won't last forever so I want to have fun with my body while I can. One clever sexy costume I saw was someone who went as Janis Joplin and wore tons of necklaces but no top! It was perfect because she had hair just like Janis and looked a lot like her. Somehow it was very revealing but not trashy or even sexy in a mainstream sense...

Has anyone else seen the sexy thing done right?
37  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / Re: Child Abuse Make Up - graphic images - image heavy on: September 13, 2009 03:30:40 PM
I have to agree with the chorus of voices saying how powerful and disturbing the images are, due to the realism, and I must also echo the voices saying that it's wonderful you are using your talents to make people pay attention to something decidedly not wonderful.

Out of sight, out of mind: it's great that this issue brought so visibly to the surface, not to make people disturbed or upset but to make people remember.

I work with children and each year attend a seminar on how to detect signs of abuse. It's deeply saddening but something everyone should be trained to do.

Good luck with your work, I know it will send a powerful message!
38  COOKING / Dessert / Commissioned Cakes- basketweave with lighthouse and chocolate birds... on: September 10, 2009 09:26:11 AM
Bringing desserts to staff meetings as a friendly gesture has led to a couple of (paid) commissioned cakes as word of my baking got around.

Not gonna lie, I am unabashedly a "fame whore" for people complimenting/enjoying my food... anyone else out there the same way? It's hard for me to accept other kinds of compliments but I absolutely eat up (hahaha!) kind words about my kitchen handywork. So when someone actually *paid* me to bake that to me is the highest praise of all!

Anyway, here are my latest. I got to take a theme and run with it. Both cakes are layer cakes with buttercream icing. Recipes below pics.

A farewell cake for a birdwatcher heading south for the season:

And a cake for an anniversary for someone who can't get enough icing! This couple also loves their beachside summer home so I tried to reflect that with the handmade chocolate lighthouse, basketweave pattern, and creeping rosebushes.

My fave white layer cake recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Creamy-White-Layers/Detail.aspx SOOOO good with none of that unfortunate "cornbread" taste that I find in so many homemade cakes. The cake has an A-mazing crumb, texture, and perfect moisture level.

For my buttercream, I just cream butter with powdered sugar, a tiny bit of salt, and enough cream to get a good consistency. Vanilla or almond extract is also added, chocolate powder to color/flavor.

If you are addicted to layer cakes, please share your work and/or recipes!

I am assuming that your roommate killed you since its now july and you havent reposted to let us know what his reaction was  Tongue

Actually, I have some sad news...

While my friend actually LOVED the uniporns, they sadly met their demise a couple of weeks ago. You see, the house I am living in is for sale and they were bringing a prospective buyer through. I knew I had to erase them because that would lead to a lot of uncomfortable questions form the owners of the house. I called my friend (who was out of town at the time) and told him I was gonna go in his room and erase his unis. He went through the five stage of grief...

DENIAL: "Really? They haven't shown the house in months!!"

ANGER "I'm renting it, I'm paying money, I should be able to have whatever I want in my own room!!!"

BARGAINING: "Well, why not just erase the c*ck on the one and leave the rest? Then it'll be PG13 instead of R."

DEPRESSION: "I'm really going to miss those guys. I've actually gotten used to them..."

ACCEPTANCE: Actually, he's still pretty bummed out about the whole thing.  Tongue He still shows pics of the to everyone he meets!
