if you're not into wood furniture, and you prefer a more modern look like stainless or something, they actually have this peel and stick foil stuff that you can apply to make something look like it's made of metal. you could probably use that for the edges and for the legs, and then probably buy a piece of glass or plex that you could cut down and then paint or etch so it looks sandblasted (frosted) and use that for the top of the desk. theoretically it would turn your wood desk into a modern looking glass and metal version. i think that the metal sheeting will stick to the varnish and the glass doesn't have to stick to anything as it just lays on top.
