4  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Trying to knit a picture into the front of a hat.... on: August 10, 2006 05:48:04 AM
My friend is trying to make a black hat with a white skull on the front.  Here are the problems:

1.  We don't want to keep tying knots everytime we get around to the skull...too bumpy, and I think it would not lay flat.

2.  So instead of reattaching the white yarn everytime, we figured we could just carry along the white as we did the black.  Since she is knitting in the round (we aren't sure how else to make a hat), when the skull is started it seems that the white yarn has to be carried around and around even though it is only over showing in the skull in the front.  Carrying the white around and around is making this hat take forever!

-->How can I get my white yarn back to the 'beginning' of the skull so I can knit with it next time I come around.....without carring it around!!  Is this possible?

3.  Even if we had the patience to carry the white around and around (i forget what the name for this is, learned it in stitch n bitch--i think it is intarsia or fair isle?) there is the whole problem of the carried-along white yarn not being as stretchy as the knitted black yarn.  The hat would end up not fitting on anyone's head.

Any advise would be appreciated!  Let me know if the post doesn't make since, I am a fairly new knitter so I don't have all the lingo down yet.

Thanks!
