21  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Re: Green Gable again, anyone?! on: December 10, 2007 12:27:41 PM
I got all excited that this was a craft related to Anne of Green Gables! Sad

Really?! I didn't know that... what's the story behind the name?

*gasp* you don't know what Anne of Green Gables is?  It's a book series by LM Montgomery about an orphan girl set on PEI. The series starts when Anne is a young girl, and chronicles her life. The last book is actually about her youngest daughter.  It's a great series!  (the book series was published between 1908 and 1932)

And, I might add, the movie adaptations (first and second, at least) were wonderful. There isn't a girl or woman in the WORLD who has seen that movie and not fallen in love with Gilbert, I think. Smiley Smiley Smiley

25  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Re: SHRINKY DINKS on: November 25, 2007 12:34:59 AM
I'm making Knitty's Calorimetry for some friends, and I thought, rather than buying buttons, it would be cool to make Shrinky Dink buttons with their initials on them or something cool like that. Has anyone tried this? I know I'm supposed to draw the button 3x bigger than what it's supposed to be, because it shrinks, right? How do I handle the button holes? How big would I make those?

It's so cute! Looking at your bag, I had a sudden inspiration to knit it to look like a cross-section of an orange.
27  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Re: Avast Men's Zip Sweater from Knitty on: November 10, 2007 05:35:16 PM
I decided to make it a half zip, so at least I can do St st in the round. It goes faster that way for me.

I casted on 80 sts instead of 70, so that at the end, when you're supposed to draw the yarn through 7 sts, you draw them through 8.

I did not do the provisional cast on at the beginning - I just casted on normally, knit the hat, and then picked up 12 sts on each side for the earflaps. And I did the i-cord using 4 sts instead of 3. (I think I'm just ornery or something.)

bopalena,

I asked someone on Ravelry the same thing, and here's what she said:

A 6-12 month old baby will probably have a head about 17-19 inches around. As written, the pattern is about 17 inches around, so it should fit about a 12-month-old baby. If you wanted to cast on fewer you could, but kids grow so fast that you might just want to knit it as written.

So, it should fit. However, I decided to cast on extra anyway.

I know there's a board on the Ravelry Heroes group for it. I'd love to start one, except I'm in the midst of Christmas presents right now Smiley
