22  Texas / Texas: Southeast / Re: San Antonio crafters??? on: February 01, 2007 01:17:01 PM
Hi there!  My husband and I may be moving to San Antonio this summer (in the hot, hot, heat).

Could you all suggest good neighborhoods to look in?  We are looking to buy something in the lower 100k.  We want a fun neighborhood, not suburbia.  Does that exist affordably in San Antonio?  We are a young couple with no kids.  We are big on using public transportation and biking to get where we need to go, so I guess downtown would be a good place to start.

I'm sorry this is so off topic of thrift stores.  Maybe it's on topic for being new to the area? Embarrassed  Thanks for any suggestions!

I've never seen Craft Lab, but I am a fan of knitty gritty.  I don't usually watch the actual show, but I use a ton of the tips that they have on the hgtv website.  Also, they've had the shows "Crafters Coast to Coast" and another one that is exactly like it with a different name on the air for a while.  On that show, crafty people like us are chosen to show off one of the wonderful crafts that they do, and show how they do it.  I love that show because of the ideas, and they often show women doing crafts that most people think "only men" can do.  (ie. woodworking, welding, etc.)

I don't know if you have a Joann's anywhere near you, but they had some circ. needles on sale for about $1.50.  They weren't the nicest needles, but if you just needed something quick that would get you through at least this project they would work.

I can't wait to see your progress!  Keep us updated!
27  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: yarn weight/gauge question on: January 03, 2007 02:12:46 PM
Alright, I bought this yarn the day after christmas.  I bought 4 balls (that's all they had in the berry color that I liked).  Did you all decide what you are going to make?  Any ideas?  I might try to make a shawl with it.  I'm not very into lacy looking things, though.  Oh, and FYI:  I read somewhere online that this yarn bleeds color.  So...watch out for that.

Thanks for the compliments!

Jane Dough, what patterns did you use for the neck warmers?  They're gorgeous!
thebeatcowboy,
The patterns for the neckwarmers were from the fall/winter DROPS catalog.  You can see the patterns at www.garnstudio.com
It's my favorite pattern site at the moment!  They have such beautiful projects, but they can be difficult to figure out.  Enjoy it!

I just love all of the gifts everyone crafted!  Zelda, your stocking is gorgeous, and my husband (always lurking over my shoulder) adores your stuffed snowman!!!

Okay...here are some of my finished hand-made gifts!  (I think my original post was page 11 or 12.

Sister #1's neck warmer:

Sister #2's neck warmer:

Brother's GF's apron:

Aunt's apron:

Nephew's Name book:

I am so very proud of how this book turned out.  Look at how cute he is!  He totally deserved all the hard work!

Some ornaments for my family members:  (I didn't get a shot of my angel, monkey, and hot air balloon ornaments...oops)

DH's tryptich done in oil pastel (only one panel showing):

BF's scarf with skull pin:

I also made:
1.  cd's for each of my sisters and for two cousins.  Instead of painting the cases, I made felted cases.
2.  vegan molasses cookies for my brother and his gf.
3.  I didn't finish DH's scarf, so I am working on it now for his birthday (which is next week).

Thanks for all of the encouragement!

Ooh, Ooh...I finished all of my gifts (pretty much) that I had planned, and threw in a few extras.  I definitely crafted over 50 % this christmas.  I will post the pics that I have tonight.  There were, of course, a couple of gifts which had to be wrapped at the last second without time for a photo... Embarrassed
