41  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: Holiday Handmade gift disappointment :( on: November 04, 2008 10:29:46 AM
DH and I have made a tradition of making generic gifts that the families can share: cookies!  My aunts and uncles, grandparents, and his brothers all get boxes of homemade cookies, which work fabulously because we can do them all at once, we don't have to worry about colors or sizes, and if they don't like 'em, they probably know somebody who will.  We usually make things for our parents, each other, and then our younger siblings, but since we go to three different family gift exchanges, we can generally assembly-line a few of the same gifts (for instance, 3 people are getting knit socks this year, 4 people are getting sets of homemade extracts, 2 people are getting screen-printed shirts, and I'm making crayon rolls and coloring books for the little kids) for efficiency.  I generally only spend a lot of time on people who I know will appreciate it (like those who are getting socks).

43  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Want to learn to knit on: October 29, 2008 09:25:00 AM
The stitch and bitch books are good to learn from, but I would also suggest knittinghelp.com if you need to actually SEE someone show you how to do it.  Good luck!

if i had it to do over again, i would have done a birdcage veil.  not that mine wasn't cute, or whatever, i just wish i had gone a little more alternative with my outfit/costume/whatever.  [yeah, that was random.]

i'll bet a veil (depending on what sort you'd like to make, of course) would cost MUCH less to make than to buy.  i bought my veil, a super simple tulle-on-a-comb with pearl accents for like 60 bucks on impulse, and later saw the supplies i would have needed for less than five dollars.  i was ashamed of myself Smiley  if you have help, it'd probably be pretty easy, too.
