1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Re: Question about DIY wedding budget on: November 03, 2010 10:36:09 PM
Quote
(a)they'll feel a bit cheated by having to bring stuff to a wedding (once they find out), (b) the food may not be stellar and/or go together very well and give a shoddy impression, (c) people do like a good sit-down dinner at a wedding,

Soooo, it sounds like you have your food dilemma solved, but for those pondering the same questions, I have this input:
(a) I would never feel cheated about having to bring food to a friends wedding, I know I like the food I make, not so much with catered food I've had before.  Besides, then I feel like I've been able to contribute to my friends celebration.
(b) if you are worried about the food going together, offer a theme to your invitees, so that the food they bring will kind of mesh
(c) Sit down dinners are restrictive.  keep your guests moving, interacting, and having a great time with each other.  It makes things fun.

Those are great.  What did you use for the color?  Is it watercolor?

Thank you! I don't have a baby either, but I was doing my best to think like a mom.

I haven't been around for awhile (not even lurking Embarrassed) but I wanted to share my latest project.
My cousin is having her first baby in June and I made this baby bag for her and dad.  The baby shower is this weekend and I am so proud of myself for being done ahead of schedule.
I used simplicity pattern 2924 (a good number of pockets without being HUGE) and some Alexander Henry Fabric.  The fabric isn't exactly babyish, but it is my cousin and her man-ish, and since they are the ones carrying it around, why not? Right?
So, here we go.
Here it is hanging from my new (and therefore clean for all you germphobes out there) longboard.

The back, so happy the pocket almost lined up

The inside

And with the customized changing pad

I will say that the changing pad may have been the hardest part out of everything.  Not only did the clear vinyl that covers the top slide everywhere but the terry cloth was shedding everywhere and I used flannel bias tape for the edges which only made it worse.  In the end everything held together and I like the way it turned out, but not without a few swear words muttered under my breath.
TADA!

Sometimes it is difficult to have an emotional connection with art, however, your stories, accompanied by such AMAZING talent, really have a way of making someone feel a close personal realtionship to your work.  How fantastic. Your future looks bright. Congratulations.

7  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: The Fanatic's Grillin Thread!!! All Grillin All The Time on: December 19, 2008 02:40:27 PM
Sooooo... I am a firefighter, and we rotate cooking.  I am not a huge meat eater (sue me) but I always cook it because my coworkers are.  I have a hard time with pork chops (as does everyone else apparently because they always seem to be the last thing in the freezer) and I am slightly intimidated by beef tri-tips.  Any suggestions?
