1  Re: Frugal Living 3: Have Yourself a Frugal Little Christmas Gallery in The Swap Gallery by varandra on: January 06, 2011 10:45:09 AM
Hoping that people still look at this thread!

After a loooong trial of our patience, IdlersDesign's package finally found it's way to me! She sent the first time in early November, yes the FIRST time, the Swedish postal service messed up, the package never got to me and it was returned to the Netherlands. So IdlersDesign sent again, and after another loooong wait (wonder what the Swedish postal service has been up to?? Huh) I finally got the package in my hands yesterday. And what a package, well worth the wait! Thanks for sending again Idlers!

She said I was going to be spoilt, but I did not expect this!!

This is one of the most amazing things I've seen, a garland of tiny origami stars (I haven't counted but there must be hundreds!), made from paper scraps and old magazines. I had it on my wist, but in color, and thought "that would be so neat in silver and white", something IdlersDesign caught onto. It looks great in the bouqet of spruce branches I use for a Christmas tree.

Beautiful handmade candles, molded from old candle scraps.

Another thing of my wist. I'm trying to minimize the amount of plastic I use, which is sometimes tricky when grocery shopping. If I'm buying onions, no problem, I don't need to put them in a bag. But with grapes it's more difficult. Not a problem anymore with these light-weight produce bags made from cheese cloth! (:

A really cool surprise: Soap nuts! I've been wanting to try these for a while now, but you can only buy them in really large containers here. Now I have enough to test 16 washes before I decide if I want to buy or not. (: Also note the container the nuts are stored in, it's made from rolled up newspaper that's been glued together. Very cool.

A beautiful, reversible tote bag made from cotton with an African print and lined with striped Linen. Pardon the picture, which doesn't do the bag justice at all, the only camera I have at the moment is my phone... :/

This little pouch contains a folded up tote bag. It will go into my purse so that I always have a bag when I need one. No more plastic!

Apart from the goodies I've mentioned so far the package also contained: Butterscotch bonbons in a tin, Paper for crafting, Japanese themed Craft magazine, a really awesome crochet shower pouf, a metal candle holder, More cheesecloth and some cute japanese fabric. And a Chocolate C for my fiancé who was supposed to pick up the package in the city. Now my brother and father delivered it instead, so they shared the chocolate with him. (:

Oh, and I made little gift bags from the wrapping paper! (:

Thank you so much IdlersDesign! This was one of the best swap packages I've ever recieved! I really appreciate all the thought and time you must have put into it!  Cheesy

Hello, since there were no claims on my list the last few days of january I have added a few items.

Claims Allowed (Outstanding): - (not claiming this round)
Claims made so far: -
Sendouts Not Sent: -
Sendouts Sent: -
Sendouts Received: -

The things on my list come from a smoke-free environment, but there may be traces of cat allergens on them.
And here's the updated list:

1/2 claim

Upholstry Fabric Swatches 13" x 23" (33 x 58 cm), except the white one which is 11½" x 18" (29 x 45 cm).
Fairly heavy fabrics, excellent for purses, bags, knitting needle holders, small laptop sleeves...
One of the following swatches = 1/2 claim.

1. Black leaves

2. White/Cream floral

3. Orange/Copper tweed (2 swatches available)

4. Black tribal floral

5. Black/Metallic plaid

6. Orange/black tweed

One choice of the following fabric items = 1/2 claim:

1. Yellow and green striped vintage fabric. I think it has once served as a curtain. Roughly measures 35" x 35" (90 x 90 cm), in some places wider in some places narrower. There is a faint stain on it, about 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm) big, it may wash away, I haven't attempted to remove it.

2. Gray and black wide striped felted wool cardigan. Missing part of the sleeves and half of one front. Excellent for small felted projects. I made wrist cuffs from part of the sleeves, and embroidered them with red flowers, looks great!

3. Bright Orange very elastic cotton jersey (less yellow than the pic). Tubular shape, measures approximately 15" x 32" (38 x 80 cm). Great for t-shirts, tank tops, tube tops, ribbing for all kinds of garments...

4. Retro fabric/surprise blouse! This is genuine 60's/70's fabric from an old seamstress friend. It is cut out to make a blouse, but can be used for other crafty purposes as well. I suspect there is a center front panel missing, otherwise the back seems unproportionately large compared to the front flaps. Anyway, whether you want to give the (large) blouse a try, use the material for patchwork or anything else, it's an excellent opportunity to get some really neat vintage fabric!

5. Wallet. Hand silk-screened adorable green print featuring little chairs. Lined with lime green felt. Coin compartment + 2 compartments for cards/bills inside. Finishing could be neater, but except for that it's a really neat little wallet.

1/4 claim

Choose one of the following two for 1/4 claim (or both for 1/2):

Left: Bag of whimsies: what you see is what you get (plus a plastic belt buckle that had fallen out of the picture)! A bag full of little trinkets, your imagination sets the boundaries for what these can be crafted into.
Right: 6 gift boxes made from old photos (I can make more of these, 6 giftboxes = 1/4 claim, please specify if you want any theme or special motif and I'll see what I can do).

One choice of the following sewing supplies = 1/4 claim (left to right):

1. Black lace ribbon. Perfect for adding a ruffly lacy finish to your sewing projects. 106" (270 cm).
2. 2 black purse handles in plastic. Inner diameter approximately 4,5" (11 cm).
3. Red and Yellow felted flower brooch and red felted flower with 2 leaves. Hopefully someone can make something fabulous from these!
4. Purple satin ribbon. Water repellent acetate. 1,5" (4 cm) wide. Says 50 yards on the spool, some of it has been used but not much, my guess is that theres at least 30-40 yards left.

1/4 claim: Fake fur, beige. Measures approximately 6" x 16" (16 x 40 cm), but is a curved shape, so the bottom end is slightly longer. I've made a bike saddle warmer from it, and I think, with some clever cutting, there's enough to make one more from this. Or any other fluffy fuzzy craft. (:

One choice of the following jewelry = 1/4 claim:
1. black fimo clay earring (for ordinary sized piercings, no stretching needed)

2. crochet violet metal wire and white bead bracelet (children's size).

3. 2 button pins

4. dangly earrings

5. brown and green macramé bracelet 1/4" wide

6. black with blue/green stones and an egyptian scarabé (22", 56 cm)

7. black flat beads (18", 46 cm)

8. red/pink square wooden beads (26,5", 67 cm)

9. black matte seed beads (29", 74 cm)

10. Silver & green beads (38", 96 cm)

11. Bronze, silver & green beads (48", 122 cm).

My last claim for the round, I'd like to claim the black board book and 4 ceramic pendants, more specifically number 1 and 4 from the left on the 2nd row and number 1 and 2 from the left on the 4th row. Hope I got the number of items right.

And here's the list:

1 claim

Skirt, made from repurposed materials. I love it but it doesn't fit me. I would estimate it to a size L or M/L. Unstretched the waistband is 32" (81 cm) around, but it stretches a lot, so I recommend it to someone with a larger hip/waist measurement than this. The waist band is 10" (25 cm) long, and looks nice folded double. Total length is 30" (76 cm) and depending on how it's worn it will go down to the knee or a bit below the knee. Could probably be worn as a dress as well. The white material is very sheer, so unless the wearer is very exhibitionistic, there is need for an underskirt or leggings underneath.

There are 40 swatches in the lot. The print measures 3" x 4,5" (11,5 x 7,5 cm). I had plans to make something cool from these, like stitching them onto paper to make cards or something like that. But that's never going to happen, so I hope someone else can make something awesome from them. If they're going in the washer I recommend pressing them with a hot iron for a minute or two first.

I've been busy 24/7 since dec 24th and haven't had time to post pictures of the two last wonderful gifts I got from sheepBlue, so here they come:

Day 2:

A set of very detailed beautiful matryoshka dolls! this must've taken a considerable amount of time and patience to make. I love the colors used and the vintage feel of the dolls. Cheesy

Day 1:

For day one I got 3 presents in one!  Grin

A cross stitch "proverb". I love cross stitch with unexpected messages! And I think I have a new favorite motif: cross-stitch DNA! Cheesy

This is my favorite thing, a shirt with a heart embroidered on the chest! I LOVE IT! Cheesy I've been wearing it non-stop since Christmas day, and the only reason I'm not wearing it in the picture is because it needs washing. I also got an embroidery encyclopedia with lots of stitches and inspiration for embroidery.

Thanks for swapping with me sheepBlue! I had such a fun time crafting for you, and opening your gifts has been great!

I hope everyone's enjoying the holidays!

On the 3rd day of Xmas sheepBlue gave to me

Breakfast! Or more precisely a bowl full of sweets! Grin Yummy! And she found Miss Vickis Jalapeño chips, something I had once on a roadtrip in the Rockies almost ten years ago, and have been longing for since then! Yay! Cheesy
I'm going to have to fight my fiancé for the dried berries (or eat them all before he comes home), he just discovered cranberries and now wants everything to be cranberry flavored. My favorites are the cherries. I'm going to share the peanut butter cups with my little brother, that's always what he orders when someone's going to North America. There are also bubble gum filled lollipops, twix bars, some powdery fruit flavored rollups, mint flavored hot cocoa mix and some delicious looking chocolate squares!
The bowl is made from a vinyl record. I've seen theese around and think they're really cool! My vinyl record collecting fiancé is going to love this too! (Or will he just think it's sacrilege? Wink )

Now I need to hurry and drink something cool, my throat is burning from the chips!
But thank you so much sheepBlue!  Grin

On the 4th day of Christmas this little bag sat waiting for me:

It contained a tree pendant, a autumn leaves hairclip and a button bracelet!  Cheesy

I love that in midst of all the green and blue buttons there's a tiny red drop! Details like that make me smile. Smiley
I've been wearing the hairclip all day. I love leaves, especially autumn leaves, and it goes so well with my hair. Smiley

Thanks sheepBlue!  Cheesy

My internet connection has been down since Friday, but now we finally got it working again, so here's 3 days worth of gifts:

Day 7
I got some help with the opening from my new found friends:

Body organ magnets! I love these! To quote sheepBlue "who can resist the aluure of body organs?" Wink And they came in a really cute decoupaged tin.
My skelly friends were a bit disappointed when they saw the contents of the tin and were saying things like "who needs organs when there are bones?!", but then they saw the skeleton decoupaged on the inside of the tin and decided it was a pretty good gift after all!

Day 6

I mentioned that I don't have room for a Christmas tree in my apartment, and look what sheepBlue sent me for day 6:

A mini Xmas tree! And some really pretty embroidered bird ornaments Cheesy:

Day 5

Today I unwrapped two mini cushions with lovely prints:

I love all the anatomy themed gifts you've sent me sheepBlue! But I must say the magpie cushion will be my favorite here, it's fabulous! And I think you did an excellent job on the sewing. I'm going to use these cushions everywhere, I think they'll make excellent travelling cushions, that way I can show them off for as many people as possible too. Wink

On the 8th day of Christmas I recieved 4 glass ornaments, two of them beautifully decorated with white and silver beads!

I had a decorating scheme planned out for this Christmas where the idea was to hang globes in white, silver and glass in my windows. I haven't had time to buy or make any ornaments yet, so this was a most welcome gift! I immediately hung them in my living room window. Taking detailed pictures that show how beautiful the beaded globes really are was difficult because there's not much daylight this time of year. But I gave it a shot and got some pretty nice ones:

Thank you for this truly beautiful gift sheepBlue!  Cheesy
