21  COOKING / Dessert / Bikini Girl Cake on: September 01, 2010 09:54:38 AM
My sister was recently in a fitness competition.  She wanted to have a party afterwards to eat everything she hadn't been able to eat while training.  So as a surprise I made my first MM fondant cake.  I painted it with food color gels (bad self tan :p) and did the bikini and flowers in fondant that I colored.  I'm sure there's a better method, but I just went with it.  I used a cake mold that I bought on ebay.  It's Wilton but it's discontinued.

She loved it!

With some cupcakes made with extra batter and fondant

Inspiration (in more ways than one!) - this is a spray tan that they have to get for the competition, so my cake really did match!
22  COOKING / Dessert / BBQ Cupcakes! (now with more and better pictures!) on: September 01, 2010 09:46:38 AM
I saw these on epicute.com and had to recreate them.  The picture is awful, but I swear they were cute (but a bit sloppy as I had like 7 other things to make that night).

Steaks = bullseye candy

Kabob = bullseye candy and candy fruit slices cut up

Hot Dogs = Mike and Ikes

All the grill marks are black decorating gel.  The only thing I didn't get right was that in the picture on epicute, they had it look like there was burning embers on the grill.  I tried it with sugar, I think they mixed in a different color cake.

23  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Girls Day and Little Dresses for Africa (Pic Heavy) on: September 01, 2010 09:33:36 AM
A while back my friend emailed a group of us and asked if we would be interested in a day of sewing for www.littledressesforafrica.org

Of course we said yes and decided to make a day of it!  We all brought our sewing machines and notions and fabric over, ordered some food, drank some sangria (yes, we sorta felt badly about making it like a party, but we were still doing something good) and sewed all day!

These pillow case dresses are really simple to make and there are instructions on the website.

I think we wound up with 11 dresses total.  Here are a few pictures...I will add more when I receive them :]

24  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / *Almost* Completed Sorority T-Shirt Quilt with pictures! on: September 01, 2010 09:13:30 AM
I couldn't wait to post until I was done because, frankly, I don't know when that will be.  It took me 4 years to actually get this project going...and I still have lots of t shirt pieces to make a second quilt!

Anyhow, I posted before about ideas for a layout and I finally decided to just pick all of the ones that were roughly the same size, trim them and (in the words of Tim Gunn) make it work!  Hence the need for a second quilt.

So the part that isn't finished is the actual quilting.  I haven't decided how I want to do it.  Doing the little yarn ties at the corners seems like the easiest option, but I don't know if I will like how it looks.  I just got a new sewing machine that's better for machine quilting...so I might try something more difficult, but I don't want to ruin this blanket.

Without further ado:

(Crappy phone pictures, perhaps I'll take better ones soon)

25  COOKING / Dessert / Oh, we're celebrating Valnetine's Day?! Oops! on: February 16, 2010 10:07:42 AM
So on Sunday I got a text saying, "Happy Valentine's Day!  I got you something..."

This wasn't quite expected as the person sending it isn't quite my boyfriend.

So I had to get something together quickly.  Enter Hello, Cupcake.  This is the third or fourth recipe that I've used from this book and I loved it.  It's simple and adorable!  This time I made the "Box of Chocolates".

This is just a phone picture...hopefully I'll upload more later.

It's mini yellow-butter cake cupcakes with chocolate ganache.  I decorated with marshmallow hearts (cut in half so they weren't so thick), juju hearts, white icing, sparkle sugar that I colored red, and cupid mix m&ms.  I didn't do the marshmallow step they recommended because the marshmallows were too big for my cupcakes.  I think it turned out cute anyway.

I bought a Spongebob heart shape box of candies (the only one left, on sale...YAY!) and put the cupcakes in and surrounded them with pink and red jelly bellys.

26  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Snug as a bug in a rug...er blanket on: November 08, 2009 05:36:18 AM
I made a kind of "Snuggle-Wrap Blanket" (Amy Butler Little Stitches for Little Ones) knock off.  Mine doesn't tie because I know my skill level and knew that both the button holes and the tie would look sloppy...but you can still wrap baby in it :]

Sorry for the picture quality, they were taken on my phone.

Thanks for looking :]
27  COOKING / Dessert / Peter pumpkin cupcake eater on: November 03, 2009 08:44:46 AM
I made another fabulously easy creation from Hello, Cupcake.

I made the pumpkin patch cupcakes...but since I'm between permanent residences, I only had large cupcake tins so there were no mini punkins :/  Oh well.

I used this recipe...even though I hate Martha Stewart for thinking she knows EVERYTHING!

http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/pumpkin-cupcakes

A note about the recipe:  I find more and more cake and cupcake recipes that call for coarse salt.  I don't know if they know some trick that I don't, but I will never use coarse salt again.  I don't know why I went against my instinct and used it this time.  It doesn't dissolve and so there were random bites of a piece of salt in the cupcake.  No one minded...but I hate having to warn people about food I've made.

I frosted them with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.  I colored the sparkling sugar myself since I couldn't find orange anywhere.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!
28  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Like buttercream made love to a cloud... on: May 11, 2009 07:43:36 PM
My friend Michelle had a birthday today.  This card will be late, but I think it's worth it.  It's just a little silly something for a girl who loves cake so much that she wrote a blog in which the following paragraph appeared:

"Just a side note on the cake. It was dark chocolate. So dark it was black. 3 layers of moist deliciousness. The frosting wasn't butter cream, it was as if butter cream had made sweet love to a cloud and then that cloud gave birth to a fluffy dark chocolate baby and then that baby was spread by Zeus himself on the layers of yummy cake. Waitress did me right on the whipped cream too."

This card is based loosely on that...and the phrase that some of you may be familiar with, "The cake is a lie."

inside:

Hope you like it...hope she likes it :]
C&C Welcome!

EDIT:  YAY SHE LIKED IT!

29  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / What kind of animal starts with X? (really really ridiculously pic obese) on: March 22, 2009 01:04:26 AM
My sister's best friend has been trying a loooong time to have a baby.  About the time we found out she was finally pregnant, I came across http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=281256.0.  Thanks to Kahlan and many others like her for inspiration (and maybe a few ideas for animals).  I had to wait until the baby was born before they would tell me his name...which is Braxton.  Having an X in my own name, I know the pain of thinking of things that start with X, but I think I made it work.

Without further ado, here is my felt name book for Braxton

Some details:

wing - plastic canvas, flowers - buttons, stripes - ricrack

tail - whit pom poms

"seaweed" - trim

Sorry for the onslaught of pictures...I'm just pretty pleased with the outcome.  I *just* finished.  I still have to lint roll each page (stupid kitteh fur) and wrap it up to send to Boston.

C & C always welcome :]

Thanks again to all of the people I pulled inspiration from!
30  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Scrapbooking: Completed Projects / Iko Iko an de - Mardi Gras scrapbook shadowbox thinger :] on: January 31, 2009 06:42:04 AM
Note:  I hope this goes here, I couldn't think of a better place for it.

A couple of years ago I went to Mardi Gras for the first time as an adult...and I use that term loosely!

We went home with bags of beads.  I literally sat on my friend's floor in a pile of beads and picked out my favorites.

I made sure I had one strand that represented each of the parades we had attended: Tucks (there are two from Tucks), Endymion, Thoth, and Bacchus.  Throw in a few cute strands of beads, adorable pictures, Mardi Gras Tiara, Scrapbook paper/stickers, a shadow box, and some E6000 and here's what I came up with...

(sorry about the blur...I couldn't get a good picture with the flash)

The "charms" from each of the parades

The lettering/stickers (sorry about the glare...oh and that's me in the pic with the hand grenade :])

One more pic of the top, though I don't know that it's much better

I'm going back this year and I'm hoping to make one of the melted bead lamp shades...or something like that ( http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=227641.0 )

Thanks for looking!
