The reason for the season:
http://www.circlesanctuary.org/pholidays/beltane.htm
http://herbalmusings.com/beltane.htm

Beltane is the celebration of life, love and fertility. It is the time when the goddess and the god consecrate their love and bring things into bloom. It is the celebration of the Maypole and the May Queen. Common gods and goddesses honored at this time are Roman goddess Flora, the Horned God, or the Lord and Lady (as well as many other personifications). This holiday is a Greater Sabbat and colors/symbols commonly include:

"Traditional symbols used to represent Beltane are the May Pole (the traditional full-size one is about 10 feet tall), May baskets, crossroads, eggs, butterchurns and chalices. Symbolically, many Pagans choose to represent Beltane with fresh flowers all around the ritual area as well as their homes and the cauldron is often totally filled with gorgeous Springtime flowers. Roses, bluebells, marigolds, daisies, primroses, violets and lilac are associated with Beltane

Plants and herbs associated with Beltane are primrose, yellow cowslip, hawthorn, roses, birch trees, rosemary, and lilac. Also included are almond, angelica, ash trees, bluebells, cinquefoil, daisies, frankincense, ivy, marigolds, satyrion root, and woodruff.

Animals associated with Beltane are goats, rabbits, and honey bees. Mythical beasts associated with Beltane include faeries, pegesus, satyrs, and giants"

This will be a 2 point swap minimum. Each participant will create a package that adds up to the minimum equivalent of 2 points according to these guidelines (and you may go above and beyond the minimum):

-Medium = 2 or more hours

PM the organizer with this completed questionnaire to join the swap. Remember that good communication, both with your partner and the group, is essential to the success of a swap. So be sure to post regularly to the forum and stay in contact with me and your partner, especially if you're having any sort of trouble during the swap period. When you mail your package, be sure to get a Delivery Confirmation or Tracking number, and PM me and your partner both when you send your package and when you receive your partner's package. If you ship international, keep a copy/take a pic of your receipt to prove you sent. It's a good idea to take photographs of your crafts before you mail them (just in case), and please post photos of the crafts you receive.

23  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Fitness/Yoga/Meditation Swap? on: February 17, 2012 07:05:31 AM

Anyone up for a fitness or yoga/meditation swap? I'm getting back into fitness and some handmade accessories would be great inspiration. Who's with me?
24  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / Creamy Hair Conditioner or Body Lotion on: February 05, 2012 05:26:51 PM
Behold, the wonders of emulsifying wax. I made this conditioner off of a recipe online. It is basically a thinner version of lotion and I did try it on my skin, works fine that way too! It's rich for my fine hair but would be great as a moisturizing pre shampoo treatment. Or I could water it down to work better for my hair type.

I also made a nettle tea-based version with rosemary oils. Fab stuff, although slightly green!

26  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / EcoFriendly/Gardening/Hippie Swap 2? on: January 01, 2012 05:37:17 AM
Hi all! I organized a swap like this last year and it was a lot of fun. I'm already thinking about spring planting in my garden so I wondered if anyone would like to bust through cabin fever with me.
Gardening or upcycled or eco-friendly items are the focus. We did lots of eco-friendly products as well. (reusable paper substitues, cleaning supplies, homeade beauty products, windchimes, etc.) Inspiration pics below!

27  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / The soap of near doom....and lotion! on: November 21, 2011 06:17:20 PM
If you read my Lye in my Eye post on the discussion board, you will learn that I tried my first CP soap...I am an HP girl. In this process I had a near injury with a lye drop near my tear duct. I am happy to say that my eye feels much better now! Thank heaven!

So what did I endanger my body for?

My first CP swirled soap....Minty Tingle. (It looks like blue cheese somehow!) The liquid colorant didn't stay so I used spirulina powder to darken my swirl. Peppermint EO.

And much safer experience-my first lotion! Very very rich. I made it with water, emulsifying wax, and almond/grapeseed oils. I had a blast with this. Scented with almond-coconut FO. LOVE this one! It seems slightly discolored since I used an old emptied lotion bottle. Don't think I will ever buy lotion again.

28  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Lye in my Eye......please be careful! on: November 20, 2011 07:16:33 PM
Hi all,

Had an epic fail tonight. I did very well in covering myself all up for my first CP soapmaking. Had the gloves, long sleeved shirt, even an apron.

I forgot to put on my eye wear.

Just a teeny little splash of lye water got in the corner of my eye (near the duct) while using the hand mixer to blend lye/water and oils.

I ran to the sink and flushed my eye for a long time with saline and took out my contacts.

It is still slightly irritated but I am very lucky to have no vision damage that I can tell. It only looks as bad as it does when I take out my contacts that are long overdue and sightly sore.

Please DO NOT forget EYEWEAR when soaping.

I just scared the crap out of myself!

5 point swap. Samhain (often pronounced Sow-wen) is the pagan holiday that is celebrated October 31st. Often called the Witch's New Year, it is a celebration of magic and the connection between the world we know and the world beyond. It is considered the best Sabbat for divination. Samhain is also the holiday to celebrate the memories of loved ones who have passed beyond the veil before us. It is the time for celebration of the dark aspects and the Crone.

Symbolism of Samhain:
Third Harvest, the Dark Mysteries, Rebirth through Death.
Symbols of Samhain:
Gourds, Apples, Black Cats, Jack-O-Lanterns, Besoms.
Herbs of Samhain:
Mugwort, Allspice, Broom, Catnip, Deadly Nightshade, Mandrake, Oak leaves, Sage and Straw.
Foods of Samhain:

Make crafted items that are pagan, wiccan, or witchcraft related or something halloween related or just plain great that your partner can appreciate and enjoy. Suggestions would include altar or spell-casting items such as candles, bowls, oil blends, etc. - as well as altar cloths, statues, jewelry, decorations, stationary, or more - look at previous galleries of similar swaps for ideas if you need them!  Be creative!

Please consider your partner's interests and requests when crafting, and feel free to contact your organizer with questions or worries! If you have any doubts about your partners interests, please ask them to clarify to make sure they will be receiving something they can use and enjoy.

This round we will be crafting a Samhain package for our partner that has a 5 point total. You can increase that if both partners are willing to do more (or if you just want to spoil your partner!) AND if you are able to send on time. Please make all effort to send on time!

Point values per size are:
Small-1 point
Medium-2 points
Large-3 points
Please abide by the general guidelines for size/time invested for deciding point makeup.

Communication is vital to a positive swap experience!

Please post at least once a week in the thread so everyone knows that we are all still working steadily towards completion of our project. Feedback will reflect communications with organizers and on the thread so remember this as an important aspect of this swap!
Lack of communication without cause can result in your removal from this swap and/or negative feedback.

If you want to participate, send this questionnaire to hawkeyes_girl. On this and all subsequent communication with organizers, please put WWP Samhain Swap 31 in the subject line:

30  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / My first (slightly mismatched) pair of socks! on: May 15, 2011 10:39:40 AM
My very first pair of socks....I suffer from single sock syndrome.
For my mom, who is a 1/2 size smaller than I.....

A basic toe-up pattern, with short row heels. They are slightly off because I used 2 different skeins. Deborah Norville sock yarn.

The first sock went like lightening but whoo boy...the second was nothing but problems. I darned the edges of the heels for strength....my short rows always leave holes....but I think they turned out pretty well considering!
