Samhain Swap Details

Date: 10-31-12
Names: Samhain, All Souls Day, All Saints Day, Witches' New Year

Excerpted from Wikipedia:
Samhain is one of the eight annual festivals, often referred to as 'Sabbats', observed as part of the Wiccan Wheel of the Year. It is considered by most Wiccans to be the most important of the four 'greater Sabbats'. It is generally observed on October 31 in the Northern Hemisphere, starting at sundown. Samhain is considered by some Wiccans as a time to celebrate the lives of those who have passed on, and it often involves paying respect to ancestors, family members, elders of the faith, friends, pets and other loved ones who have died. In some rituals the spirits of the departed are invited to attend the festivities. It is seen as a festival of darkness, which is balanced at the opposite point of the wheel by the spring festival of Beltane, which Wiccans celebrate as a festival of light and fertility.

As this is a short swap, we are going to do a size-free, goodwill swap. This means you and your partner determine what is appropriate for swapping between yourselves. There is really a 1 pt small minimum but most people will likely exceed this by at least 1 other small. How big you go is up to you. Offer what you feel comfortable, it is on everyone to just craft the best you can no matter how many or how few objects.

Plan to post updates on progress weekly, make sure you are getting DC numbers on in-country packages and keeping receipts for out of country swaps. Also please make sure to take pics of what you send and what you receive to post in the gallery.

Mabon Harvest Swap

Excerpted from http://wicca.com/celtic/akasha/mabon.htm

Mabon
Autumn Equinox, 2nd Harvest, September 21st

"Mabon, (pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn) is the Autumn Equinox. The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year's crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Various other names for this Lesser Wiccan Sabbat are The Second Harvest Festival, Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon, Equinozio di Autunno (Strega), Alben Elfed (Caledonii), or Cornucopia. The Teutonic name, Winter Finding, spans a period of time from the Sabbat to Oct. 15th, Winter's Night, which is the Norse New Year.

At this festival it is appropriate to wear all of your finery and dine and celebrate in a lavish setting. It is the drawing to and of family as we prepare for the winding down of the year at Samhain. It is a time to finish old business as we ready for a period of rest, relaxation, and reflection."

To celebrate the balance of light/dark and the Second Harvest, we are focusing on crafting a 3 pt swap with at least one item intended for altar or travel altar use. Examples could be mini-shrines, altar cloths, offering containers, candle holders, etc.

See previous swaps to get a sense of size. One could craft 1 large item, 1 med and small items, or 3 small items with freedom to go larger based on partner agreement.

Congrats on the good news Radmom! Happy new family blessings!

Just wanted to share my current altar setup and a snippet of my current garden bounty (I have gotten 3 zucchini and 4 heads of broccoli and tons of lettuce as well as 2 cups of rose petals-what can I do with them?)

Beautiful wild sweet peas:

Broccoli and tomatoes:

Wonderful "fairy path" under my asparagus plants-looks like a wooded lane to me!

Just a pretty shot of my asparagus fronds with rain on them...I think it's beautiful.

Hope nobody minds, I just wanted to share!

Fancybutch spoiled me 40's war effort style!

I asked for the War at Home style things and my neighbor to the north provided!

She sent me: a Make do and Mend cross stitch picture, Civilian corps napkins, a ration book from Toronto from the period (my secret lust item!), and a really cool decoupaged tray with home canning/preserving propaganda! Everything is so nice and neatly done! Wowza!

Thanks so much fancy butch!  Grin

Eeps! I'm having so much swap anxiety now....I didn't put as much stuff in my package to Edel (It was more of a mental creativity project)....if you feel disappointed in any way I will totally send you a makeup package! Please lemme know!  Undecided

I however, got a lovely package from Quaisor all the way from Australia! And in 5 days no less!

I actually celebrated the solstice late so it's all good!  Grin

Wheel of the Year Postcard (pic is blurry, sorry!)

My very first ATC's for the elements! I've never gotten these before, thank you! I think they may be matted and framed! They are very beautiful, I think the pic doesn't do them justice!

Thanks very much for a lovely set of artwork!  Grin
