I did use a pattern, It's so Easy It's simplicity 2638.  I did have to alter the chest region in order to accommodate her chest but other than that I followed the pattern.

My room mate for years has wanted a cotton mumu, and I kept telling her no, and this year we reached a compromise.  After looking around to for maxi dresses at the stores and finding nothing that she liked, I decided to make one for her.  Plus I had a coupon for Joanns that was burning a hole in my pocket.

i think he looks like a lion, and not a bear.  I bought that issue of Crochet today last night and no I am debating on whether I want to make the turtles or the little shrug first.

You could put a little curtain across the front after painting and distressing it.  Or you could get strips of balsa molding (you can find it in the woodworking area of the craft store), frame out the shelves and then paint it.  I do like the idea the other person had about the crackle paint, that does create a really neat effect.
