boyfriend's birthday hoodie! in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by thriftrat

Hey all, I forgot to post this! And it's way overdue since I made it all the way back in February. This was for my boyfriend's 21st birthday, among other little presents like handmade card, brownies, graphic novels, etc. It's made out of lightweight jersey, with kangaroo pockets, epaulets and zipper down the front. I winged it mostly, because I've made hoodies before and I know the general pattern of one. However, I made it too small the first time round, which was really embarrassing; I ended up having to make new sleeves and add panels down the sides. It turned out alright though as you can see, I'm really happy with it! Though I wish jersey was easier to sew, and that zips could stay down flat like they're meant to. Grrr. Anyway, on to the pictures: Sorry for the blurriness in some of these. Thanks for looking guys! Comments welcome

maxi dress with... flames? flower petals? coral formations? you decide! in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by thriftrat

Hey all Here's the first maxi dress I've made. Considering some of the more complicated projects I've sweated over before, I wonder why I haven't tried one of these until now. It's soooo easy! It's basically just a tube dress with straps and ties. Anyway, I found this pretty printed silk in Chinatown Singapore, and the lady said it was from Italy. I love how abstract it is - to me it looks like petals, fire and coral all at the same time. I also love the gorgeous mix of purple blue and pink. Anyway, pictures! That purple undertone you see is the lining; I decided on purple instead of black because it looked more interesting under the translucent fabric. The lining is not visible in regular light though. Full view. What it looks like minus flash. Cheers everybody! EDIT: I'm not really all that sure what fabric this is, I do believe some sort of silk blend? It was about 15SGD a yard so it can't be real silk. But still, it's really really soft and flowy!

checked blazer! :) in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by thriftrat

Hello all I've had some time to sew since I'm in between jobs, and I'll be using this time to start on a portfolio for next year - I'm going to try for a fashion design scholarship at a local art school, as the fees are just too too much. I really hope I get it *crosses fingers* I've wanted to study fashion for years, and now that I've finally finished school at my polytechnic, I can go do what I really love. Anyway, here's what I've made with some gorgeous check fabric I found at Spotlight! This blazer started out life as something else entirely, a motorcycle style jacket to be exact. I had the perfect silver zip to go with it too. But I realised that it would have been too much, what with the busy pattern and all, so I opted for a cute cropped blazer instead. Just winged it basically, and I'm going to add pockets in the morning. I forgot to take a fabric close-up DOH The pictures do it no justice, it has some raelly pretty silver threads running through the fabric, prettyyyy On to the visuals! Here's my mug. I also made the fringed purse Lapels Ohai 'tocks Hahaaa I tried to get my shoes into the picture, but ended up looking like a really awkward ballerina. Cheers everyone

fake leather fringed purse! in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by thriftrat

Hey all I've wanted a fringed purse for the longest time, but couldn't seem to find any that i really wanted (or were affordable). So, i decided to make one myself! I originally wanted to make a jacket with my fake leather fabric, but slowly lost interest in it, so I used the leftovers for this bag instead. This is my first attempt sewing leather, which is the biggest pain in the ass that i've ever encountered, ever. It even trumps sewing silk or stretch. I had to resort to using talcum powder on the leather so it would sew smoothly, or just sewing reeeaaally slowly and hoping for the best lol This was super time consuming, it took me aaaaages just to cut out all that fringe! 3 layers of them. Other than that, the construction of the bag was pretty basic. It is lined with some ikea canvas, which was really meant for curtains or some shit, but makes for great lining. Okay, less talk more action! On me, haha I couldn't resist. Fringe! Innards Concrit appreciated Have a good one, you guise.

my attempt at rainbow cheesecake, with oreos! in Dessert by thriftrat
|

Hey guys:) This is my first post on the dessert board, to show you talented bakers me and my friend's attempt at this rainbow cheesecake recipe: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=193137.0 It looks nowhere near as good as what some of you have posted, but it still tasted great and that's what counts methinks So anyway, my boyfriend Syed POPed from his national service today, so I wanted to make him something nice. One of my best mates Syaza had already tried out the recipe (hers was a splatter cake) and gave it the green light, so we made one more today! Syed likes cheesecake and I like colors, so it was perfect. Yummy! Fresh out of the oven! Check out the rainbow residue all around the cake. And the colors came out perfect:) I wish the yellow was brighter though. ! This was really fun and pretty easy to make. However, next time I'll probably do cupcakes instead, cheesecake gets very... cheesy after awhile. The colors look the brightest for cheesecake though, because of its density. It crumbled and cracked while we cut it because we didn't have time to cool it sufficiently, so it was still quite soft. Still good anyhow! Concrit appreciated, thanks for viewing

first time sewing jeans! also, a cape?? in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by thriftrat

Hey all:) I had my Saturday plans cancelled last minute due to unforeseen circumstances, so in a fit of boredom, frustration and desperation I made high waisted jeans and a hooded cape. The fabric was really cheap from chinatown, and pretty good quality too. I used stretch denim for the jeans, and thick pinstripe grey cotton for the cape. Ignore face plz. Pockets Look at my butt, look. I love it alot! And the stretch denim is super comfortable. Okay, and then I saw this hooded cape at Topshop and thought I'd make one too... I don't know exactly how wearable this shit is, but it's fun! I'm going to add lots of big white/black buttons in front. Sorry for the wrinklyness, I was too lazy to iron it Hahaha you can see where I haven't finished hemming. Look it's a bat! Why yes, I do intend to wear it out like that. In underpants. Have a good day all! Cheeriooo
