11  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / Re: How do I turn on my sewing machine?! on: May 15, 2007 01:14:50 PM
I have never heard of a machine that didn't have some kind of 'foot' to control the speed of the stitches and to stop and start the stitching. Some older machines did have a 'foot' that was controled by your knee. I would suggest looking under the machine, inside the cabinet, and see if there is a lever that you could push with your knee.

Also, look directly under the wheel and see if there is an outlet there. If there is, you are missing the foot.
12  Oregon / Oregon: Northwest / Sewing lounge in Portland? on: May 03, 2007 12:15:32 PM
Does anyone know if we have a sewing lounge in the Portland-Vancouver metro area? A place where you can rent a sewing machine by the hour and work on your project there or you just rent the space to spread out and work on a craft project. If there isn't one here - do we need one?

I am doing a crochet with wire class in NE Portland, but it ends at 3pm. I'll stop by afterwards.

I got absolutely spoiled in this swap!!! Here is the first tin I received from DogGrrl:

She used my sunflower and blue theme and the quote on the top of the tin says 'Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. That is what sunflowers do. - Helen Keller'

Inside of the lid of the tin she made cute little pockets out of sunflower paper. Inside the pockets were sunflower stickers:

And all the loot - the sunflower stickers, a second tin with lip balm, a packet of sunflower seeds and a metal sunflower stencil:

Than today I received my tin from Jennyleigh, she also picked my sunflower and blue theme and added in my quilting theme. Here is the tin, she made it into a chatelaine by attaching a measuring tape and scissor holder:

We both did pincushion tins!! LOL

And now the loot - she sent a leather quilters thimble, a replica needle book and a package of sunflowers for embellishing. She also sewed the card and sent me the extra sunflower fabric!!!

Thanks to both of you, everything is great!

17  NEEDLEWORK / Sublime Stitching Embroidery / Re: Ask Jenny - Everything You've Wanted to Know (But Were Afraid to Ask) on: April 27, 2007 11:22:54 PM
Jenny - I was on another craft site where one of the posters said that she was told by a needle craft store that 2 yrs ago the government required floss manufacturers to remove the dye setting agent from their floss. According to this poster, this is now causing alot of bleeding in embroidery work. I admit I have been out of the loop when it comes to embroidery as I just recently picked it back up after a twenty year break, but do you know if there is any truth to this? Is color bleeding really a concern?
18  Oregon / Oregon: Northwest / Re: Moving To Portland! on: April 27, 2007 09:45:59 AM
Portland does have a growing theater community, so there might be some opportunities there. And the job market does seem to be good right now. Check out Oregonlive.com or Craigslist for jobs information. As far as not using your car much, I have been without a car for almost three years this round and ten before that. Portland does have a great mass transit system.

Wow, you guys all have some great themes. I don't think I would have ever thought of dectives, zombies, lawn ornaments or the French revolution! But they all made for get tins. I received my awesome tin from Doggrrl and meant to put phots up last night, but the night got away from me. I will definitely get pictures up tonight.
20  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: Pepto the Elephant :: A Fiber Pachyderm on: April 25, 2007 11:21:00 AM
I love elephants and have a large collection. This little guy and your story made me very happy! Now I really wish I knew how to knit.
