11  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / dying with superwash questions on: August 14, 2008 09:10:48 PM
I was dying some super wash roving this evening and I've got some questions. Mostly "is this right?"
Superwash smells. Like I-STILL-feel-like-I'm-gonna-retch-smell. Is this normal or am I over reacting? I know it smells but this was AWFUL.
I know it's supposed to take dye well but this was almost stupid- I'd pour dye on and it would just STOP- it wouldn't bleed into the next area or (and this is what was making me nuts) it wouldn't bleed all the way through the roving. Again, normal?

(hm, maybe the smell isn't what's giving me a stomach ache, maybe it's something else, like that smell coming in from outside....)

14  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Knit from Handspun on: March 16, 2008 06:02:54 PM
After some encouragement I'm cross posting this from the spinning board.  Grin
I bought a batt on etsy from artclub. Loved it. Spun it up. Plied it with sewing thread (came out really pretty and stretched the yardage.)

Knit up Knitty's Calorimetry. Added I cord instead of a button. (I have a big head and can get fussy if things are really tight on my melon.) Discovered that with my hair up in a bun, my neck gets cold. Decided to knit a Moebius scarf. Bought Cat Bordhi's A Treasury of Magical Knitting. Knit moebius scarf.

(discovered moebius scarf is the perfect length to cover the drool/snot mess on my chest left from carrying my 6 month old in a wrap while shopping...)
close up of hat and scarf..

I think I may have to go buy another one of those batts, they were GREAT!

18  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Batt of the month club swap! on: February 16, 2008 05:19:53 AM
I want to join every batt of the month club. But I think my husband would have a heart attack  Grin I love to swap. Maybe combine the two........Huh?
I'm not sure of details and logistics but I'm open to ideas and discussions!

Who's interested?  Grin

Some ideas and thoughts:
We could do a number of one month swaps. But I think that could get rough on an organizer and confusing for participants.
What I'd really like to do is set up the swap for multiple months, say three. So you sign up and get your person who you will swap batts with for the next three months. A variation to that would be you sign up one month and have three different partners that you would sent batts to, one person in month one, another person in month two, and person number three in month three. I need to check guidelines though, can we have swaps running this long?
I'm also totally up to opening it to dyed roving too!
19  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Completed Projects / I have a new Pretty Spinning wheel on: January 07, 2008 08:48:06 PM
I have been wanting a new spinning wheel for a bit. I own the Ashford Joy and while I love the wheel to bits I felt I had out grown the smaller bobbins and wanted bigger ones. And now I have wee ones wandering around my house (wee ones were so NOT in the picture when I bought my wheel!) so I've been looking for a 'safer' wheel. I wanted one that had a solid main wheel so little fingers would not get stuck in it. Majacraft and Louet both make solid wheel spinning wheels. Louets are a bit less expensive, so I must admit I was leaning that way. With a little extra Christmas money and a little luck on line I got myself the Louet s 17 kit. FINALLY.

A solid wheel is begging for decoration. I think I've been thinking about what to put on the wheel as long as I've been thinking about the wheel! I wanted a dragon and a tiger chasing each other around. My drawing skills stink. I knew I couldn't do it so when my wheel came in I called my older brother. He's got the drawing skills. I like the dragons he draws. He pencilled in my two creatures (while our offspring played). I then took the wheel over to my mom's house and while she and my dad watched my babies I painted the creatures. I am agog at how well they came out. Seriously. I didn't know I could paint like that.  Shocked I came back to my parents the next day to stain everything and one more trip to put it all together this evening. Good thing my kids like their grandparents.  Grin

Behold, The wheel.

It was actually serendipitous that the creatures are facing the 'proper' direction ie clockwise.

The wheel fully assembled:

oops, watch the background when taking pictures.

And one more of the spinners eye view...

Seriously, SERIOUSLY, I am so excited with how awesome this came out. Now excuse me, while my baby sleeps I'm gonna go SPIN!!!
20  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / sock yarn for dying on: December 29, 2007 03:23:14 PM
I want to knit up some socks, and I want to dye my own sock yarn. I know you can get sock yarn to dye in big o cones and the like. I just can't find it. Any help?
