1  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / pair of monsters on: November 02, 2008 12:31:54 PM
all the costumes everyone has posted so far are great!
my friends and i are pretty big on costumes but this year i was afraid i wouldn't be able to celebrate due to making a wedding cake for the day after halloween. well it turned out the weekend before, something opened up in my schedule so i had a couple days to throw costumes together for my boyfriend and i.  the best part was that i had everything i needed on hand and only spent $5 for spray on hair color.  im not a big sew-er so everything is hot glue and safety pins Smiley

in all of our monster glory!  three eyes, a horn, and lots of fur.  i liked how i had some of his material around my neck like his monster bitch, haha.

the blanket i cut up to make his suit.  it was a good blanket and it will be missed.

pinning his tummy on

only one where you can see his paws.

not one complaint about showing up and being handed head to toe purple fur to wear...he's a keeper Smiley

a little blurry from the fog machine but the only one where you can kinda see my furry boot covers

thanks for looking and i hope everyone had a merry halloween!

2  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / new cabinet...from plain to citrus-y! on: March 27, 2008 05:59:54 PM
Lately I have acquired quite a few cake decorating and baking supplies and have been busting out of my not very big kitchen.  My mom is moving and offered me a little cabinet she had.  It was okay on it's own, but a little too plain for my taste. My roommate had the green paint, I bought a small thing of yellow for like $5, and I had the paper laying around just waiting to be put to good use.  I'm pretty sure I will always want my kitchen in greens and yellows, so I'm super excited to have this cute and functional piece around!

3  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / gnome costume on: November 06, 2007 06:04:20 PM
for halloween i really wanted to be a gnome. it was inspired by a user picture on craftster...mywitsa nd4.  i went for more of a lawn gnome but people also called me david the gnome or the gnome in the travelocity commercials.

it was pretty easy...i had the pants, bought the shirt at goodwill, had to buy the boots which ended up being like $23 (however, they paid for themselves because i won the costume contest!) and then i just made the hat and beard out of felt and hot glue.  to add a little more dimension to the beard, i started out with a piece of flat white felt, then took strips of white felt and glued them to pieces of wire. then kind of curled them and glued them onto the flat piece.
4  COOKING / Dessert / halloween cupcakes on: November 04, 2007 08:58:49 PM
cobwebs and skeletons.  the skeletons were an idea from doing a google image search for halloween cupcakes.  they were easy and cute and everyone really liked them!
also, i had no idea how tasty it would be to simply add cocoa powder to my vanilla buttercream frosting.  it gave it a really smooth and subtle chocolate flavor. will definitly be using it again!

Thanks for looking Smiley
5  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 22 ENTRIES / morning/night pillowcases on: November 03, 2007 10:43:47 AM
Ok, first off I should say that after seeing the amazing entries so far I totally don't even want to post mine. I honestly have no idea how to embroider and I feel like other people's first times turn out a lot better than mine did!  It's kind of hard for me to learn by reading about the techniques and there is no one I know who does it to teach/show me.  So I kind of have my own little technique...I call it the "psycho stitch."  I drew an outline of what I wanted and then just started jabbing the needle all over in between the lines  Cheesy  Alright, enough explanation.  First here is the morning one...
It is supposed to be more like a sun but some have said it looks like a flower. meh, i suppose either one works.

Night:

and the action shot:

And there you have it!  Oh, I guess I should also tell you I started out with crummy old white pillowcases and dyed them.
Thank you for looking!
*Hopefully my pictures work, I'm still kind of a noob Smiley
6  COOKING / Dessert / hooray for fall and apple pie! on: October 01, 2007 10:13:51 PM
i think i've only made one other pie in my life so i was a little nervous to work with crust and all that.  next time it will be prettier. i used rose levy berenbaum's recipe from the pie and pastry bible and...wow!  her recipe for cream cheese crust is so delicious.  the whole pie was just really tasty.
i was curious if anyone else has worked with many of her recipes either from this book or the cake bible.  i sometimes think her instructions to be so tedious and drawn out with so many steps but i must admit, they usually turn out very nice! any thoughts?

7  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / help for a cupcake costume? on: September 03, 2007 09:59:04 PM
hey there! i have decided to be a cupcake for halloween and while i have a few ideas, i was hoping some of the craftster folk could give me some input on how they would go about making the costume.  i can't really sew so that hinders me a bit. i can kind of hideously stitch i suppose if need be!
thanks so much in advance for any ideas you have Smiley
8  COOKING / Dessert / ice cream cake on: August 30, 2007 05:38:26 PM
a friend requested an ice cream cake for his birthday and i wasnt really sure how to go about it but fortunately it turned out to be really easy!  i just froze all the components separately and then assembled it.  the only bummer was that i tried to make a whipped cream to frost it with and it failed miserably, so i had to make a grocery store run and buy it at the last minute.  i used the recipe from the cake bible and followed it exactly but it never thickened, then turned lumpy and kind of curdled. has anybody ever used that recipe or have any suggestions as to what could have gone wrong?  anyway, here are the pictures...

9  COOKING / Dessert / carousel/circus cake on: August 25, 2007 09:38:23 AM
a friend happened to have this amazing vintage carousel cake topper so for her birthday me and another friend used it as inspiration for her cake. i  thought it turned out pretty darn cute!  the bottom cake is yellow, the top is chocolate, and the frosting is buttercream with some fondant decorations.

Thanks for looking and hopefully the time is soon coming when i can post pictures directly in here Smiley
10  COOKING / Dessert / harry potter cupcakes on: July 30, 2007 06:10:45 PM
with all the harry potter mania this month and the fact that harry and i share the same birthday (tomorrow!)  i decide to throw a little harry potter themed party.  i dont know why i put the frosting on like turds haha, but i thought they were kinda cute nonetheless.
