1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / My (well, our) wedding cake on: May 22, 2006 08:00:17 PM
My husband and I took classes at Michael's and learned how to decorate cakes and make sugar flowers. After several months of these lessons (and a couple private lessons), Dave made the cakes and most of the flowers and I designed and placed them.

Here are a bunch of pics:

This is our main cake. The bottom layer was strawberry shortcake, the middle layer was italian cream cake, and the top layer is just vanilla (for next year).

Here's another pic of the same cake:

We also made a grooms cake (marchino cherry and chocolate with chocolate covered cherries to decorate) which you can see here:

We are still getting compliments on the cakes. Smiley Mostly how delicious they were; I have to say, I married a great cook/baker.

Limited to a certain number of people? nope

Non-U.S. participants allowed? yes

All ages allowed? Or 18+? all ages

Organizer is aware of current list of "suspended traders"
list and will not allow those members to participate: YES

Organizer meets the 4 conditions for swapping and will make sure that every participant meets these conditions: YES

Details of swap:
I decided, since I missed out on this swap before, that I would start a remix of it. It's the same swap with mostly different questions and each person sends/receives 2 cds instead of one.

There are 20 questions and you answer each question with a song, burn those twenty songs onto 2 cds, make a cool cover for them and send them off.  You send 2 cds and receive 2 cds.  If those twenty songs won't fit on one cd you may delete 1-2 of the songs to make the playlist fit, however you still have to answer the question with a song and tell your partner about it.

The questions:
What's your favorite song to boogie to?
What's your favorite color?

5  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Pen Pal Journal unSwap? on: July 23, 2005 08:35:36 AM
I'm thinking about starting a penpal journal (un)swap. Have you seen those journals that you send back and forth through the mail? (You can find them in the stationary area of barnes and nobles. It's a little journal and a bunch of envelopes.) The idea is you can write your best friend (or whoever) a letter or pictures and then send the journal. Then, they write in it, pictures, drawings whatever, and send it back again. I thought this could be a fun way to get to know some craftsters.

I would set people up by interest, region, age, whatever they wanted. Everyone would make 2 journals, then I would give them 2 addresses to send to. Everyone would write a "get to know me" entry in each book and send their journals to their two addresses. So all in all, each participant would start out with 4 penpals. Then, we just keep writing to each other as long as we want to. You could send little crafties and such or pictures or draw in the books, whatever, just get to know each other and have fun. So, if something happens and you can't keep up, then you just tell them. The person who started the journal gets to keep it. So, hopefully, with having 4 penpals, we'll all be able to have 1 or 2 pals that stick with it.

Sound good? If people are interested, I'll start it up.

This swap is for anyone in college, as well as alumni and other fans. The idea is actually to send a college care package, but if you are an alumni or something, we'll make arrangements for that too.

Ideas for stuff to send:
jewelry, knit or crocheted items, or sewn items in uni colors or with uni logo
bath and body products
school supplies (book covers, decorated folders or pencil boxes, journals, bags)
delicious homeade goodies
picture frames
and MUCH, MUCH MORE!

Remember you can always check out commercial care packages for ideas.

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

QUESTIONNAIRE TO ANSWER:
Name of swap
Craftster username
Email address
Your real name
Mailing address
Would you be willing to ship to an address outside of the US?
1. What's your uni name/mascot/colors? (Post pictures if you'd like so your swapper can see the right colors, etc.)
2. Are you a undergrad? (If, so what year? Frosh, Soph, Jun'r, Sen'r) or Are you a grad student or alumni? Or fan?
3. What subjects are you taking/majoring/interested in? Sports, clubs, etc?
4. Do you live in a dorm?
5. Anything specific that you are hoping to get?
6. What crafts are you likely to do? (Do you knit, crochet, embroider, sew, paper-craft, etc?)

Really, if you'd like to write a little paragraph about your situation (basically answering these questions and adding any other relevant information), then I can just send that on to your swapper.
A sample paragraph might be something like:

"I'm a freshman at Texas A&M. Whoop! Our mascot is the Aggies and our colors are maroon and white. I'm majoring in engineering but am really more interested in FOOTBALL!! I plan to go to every game. I'd love to get an A&M scarf to keep me warm at the winter games. I'll be living in the dorms and taking English, Calculus, Chemistry, and History. I'll really miss my best friend; we've known each other since kindergarten, but now she's going to a different school. Gig 'em!

For my swapper, I plan to make some bath products and probably some jewelry."

Don't worry about going into detail about what you plan to make. But I can use that information to put people together with swappers who make the kind of items the particularly want, if possible.

7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Pressies for boyfriend's family... on: October 05, 2004 11:33:23 AM
Ya'll did such a great job helping me figure out what to give my boyf (who's generally impossible to shop for) I thought I'd run this dilemma by you.

I'm thinking I could do some easy and cheap and nice bath salts for the women and that would work really well and definitely be closer to budget. But what for the guys?? I was thinking cider or cocoa mix (even found one for diabetics) but my boyf said they really don't drink hot drinks, not that kind of family (whatever that means). So maybe for the brotherinlaw (who loves food!!) I could make a brownie mix or something (they dont' have any allergies in their house). He'd dig that and it would be easy/cheap enough.
But what for dad??

My boyfriend's dad:
I've met the parent's a few times, they aren't superthrilled with me (esp the mom) but like me nonetheless (you know how parents can be, stealing their boy away and what not). Anyway, I don't know a ton about them. I do know that both are devout baptists (i think)
Dad:  loves garage sales and the like, total pack rat, has been involved with the boy scouts for a long time but I think he's ending that soon, he's diabetic

Also his  brother-in-law (who probably likes me much better than the parents ):
they've just bought a new house so I could do maybe a cross-stitch or something for their home (bless this home and the family who lives here, kind of thing), they both are youth ministers at their church

Brother in law: works as a parole officer for kids in the area

yeah, I don't know the family well, but they seem conservative and not too crafty (except his grandma quilts)(nor are they into decorating with crafts particularly).

Okay any ideas for any of them are welcome...
8  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / simple yummy soup (fairly cheap also) on: September 30, 2004 10:21:04 AM
This is my variation of Pho Ga. (chicken pho)

Ingredients:
Rice Noodles (whatever size you want, little ones are my favorite but I don't like the smallest ones, go to an asian market and get rice noodles) ($2.25 for a big bag, 21 oz)
chicken broth (2 big cans) (or chicken boullion cubes made into broth, much cheaper $1.5) $4
beef boullion (optional, adds a little flavor)(just 1-2 teaspoons, or 1 cube) $0-1.5
limes (I usually by the small limes and get 2, may want 3) $.50-1
jalapeno (fresh, just 1-3 depending on how spicy the people eating it like stuff) $1-2
garlic (just need a tiny bit, but fresh is best, so get a clove and use what you want) <$1
fresh cilantro $1-3 (check out farmer's markets for fresh cheap produce)
fresh basil $1-3
green onions (optional) $1
spring greens (optional) $2-5 (look for a place to buy from a bulk bin if you don't have a farmer's market, then just buy a tiny bit)
chicken (1-3 breasts works fine, depending on how much meat people really want) $2-5
fish sauce $3

So now you've spent between $15-32 and are ready to make enough food for 4 or more people (depending on how much people eat).

1. Boil the chicken.
2. While the chicken is boiling, slice the jalapenos (lengthwise, so you have sticks), set out the other greens (greens, cilantro, basil, etc), cut the green onions (whatever size you want), slice one lime in half and the other in quarters (everyone should get one quarter). Slice 1 or 2 sections of garlic into little rounds (or mince it).
3. When the chicken is boiled, dump the water and set the chicken on the cutting board.
4. Use the pot to make the broth (alot of water, 32 oz?, and some boullion or the 2 cans of broth). Flavor with beef boullion if wanted. Start bringing to near-boil. Also start a teapot or another pot of water (enough to cook noodles, but don't put noodles in it, just boil the water).
5. Squeeze half a lime into broth, put garlic slices (minced) in broth, put a T of fish sauce (or to taste) in broth.
6. When water starts to boil, put rice noodles in bowl in the sink and pour boiling water on top. Let sit for 5 min, stirring frequently. Drain (assuming they are cooked, you will want to check).
7. Take big huge bowl and put noodles and chicken in it. Scoop on some broth. Add jalapenos, greens, cilantro, basil, onions to taste. Also can add soy sauce or hot sauce if wanted (b/c it's got a delicate flavor, some people describe as bland).
8. Enjoy (hopefully).

Leftovers are yummy but you should just make enough noodles for right then each time, b/c they don't sit well.

9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Another request for ideas for boyf's gift on: September 30, 2004 09:56:48 AM
I'm thinking for Xmas b/c I always plan way in advance.

Anyway, he's in his 30s, he's an engineer, hates his job, loves scuba diving, loves hashing (running and drinking beer), has started running with me and biking with me, doesn't like chatckes or little crap around the house, very practical, likes interiour decorating, into vampires a bit (reads books and likes movies), loves herb stuff and cooking.

Basically I need grownup-ish, doesn't seem homeade, kinda useful or neat ideas and all I can come up with is stuff that I can't afford (i'm a broke student) or don't know how to do or are totally useless things that he wouldn't like. (Well I was going to knit him a blanket but that was going to take me several months.)
