1  Re: felted coasters for mother's day in Knitting: Discussion and Questions by Kazkitty on: May 07, 2008 06:32:26 PM
I don't know if this is helpful.. but I've made coasters from SWS before and the color changes are more apparent than you would think for a small project.. well I think so anyways.. lol  I crocheted mine.. but it would probably look similar if knitted...

after felting:

Can't wait to see what you come up with! It'd be great to see a different design for coaters... I've been wanting to make more for some friends.  Smiley

5  1st big batch of dyed roving - kool-aid and wiltons (IMG obese!) in Dyeing: Completed Projects by Kazkitty on: August 15, 2007 02:11:46 PM
I have NEVER even thought about dyeing this much roving before.. and to some people, it's probably not a lot.. but it is to me. I've only done one skein of yarn.. then maybe two ounces of roving before. I don't even know how much I have total honestly.. I'll have to wait til it's dry then weigh it.

Anyways.. onto the pics!

This is where most of it came from.. I ordered 1 lb of superwash/nylon and 1lb of a brown mix from the Sheep Shed

And here's what I did with it! Cheesy

Kool-aid and walmart brand kool aid - superwash/nylon

more kool-aid - superwash/nylon

and more.. but the blue and green in the middle is food coloring - superwash/nylon

and yet more kool-aid - superwash/nylon

wiltons - superwash/nylon

more wiltons - superwash/nylon

kool-aid - left is hibiscus colorway wool blend from spunky eclectic.. I didn't really like it so I decided to overdye it - right is brown sheep mill ends in black tones I got on ebay, overdyed

brown sheep mill ends from sheep shed overdyed with blue and green food coloring.. the blue didn't really come out that bright.. but I really like the way it came out. Cheesy

I had a lot of fun trying this today.. but I am beat after all that dyeing and cleaning up!

I've only got one done this week.. and this one took forever for me to do.. mainly because I was still annoyed at the colors of the roving (I ordered from Spunky Eclectic and it was supposed to be bright blue/green and it came and was bright green/white/weird purple.. >< )

Anyways... 135 yds  12 wpi  100% wool

Swamp Water  64 yds, 20 wpi
spun from silk hankies purchased from drivebyknitting on etsy

Starlight Mint 68 yds, 10 wpi
green roving is merino/corriedale from mainewoodsyarn on etsy and the white is unknown wool that came with my wheel. This is my first wheel spun!

Frog's Breath  130 yds, 12 wpi
roving is the same as in starlight mint, plied back on itself. My second wheel spun yarn!

I recieved my square from pogmothin!

Holy cow.. each square I get seems to be more detailed than the last! I'm so amazed with everyone's abilities and I'm starting to feel bad that I'm only doing single colors cause I'm so bad at switching colors...

Anyways.. it's gorgeous!
