14681  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Sewn, quilted, embroidered messenger bag for Awesome Swap on: June 28, 2010 10:21:46 AM
We were allowed to make only ONE thing for the Awesome Swap...since my partner, sheepblue, needed a messenger bag for her school supplies, books, etc., I decided that would be my one project...

I rarely make these because they really are a lot of hard work--so many parts and pockets, zippers, etc.

I started by making a quilted panel that I wanted to use as an outside pocket for the bag.  Sheepblue is an awesome artist and does these fantastic altered puzzles, so I tried to mimic her technique by edging the rectangles with black fabric paint and embellishing them with some embroidery, beads, felted flowers, etc.  The fabrics themselves were art since they are from my Kaffe Fassett collection.  I used heavy duty denim as a base since I knew it would get some pretty hard wear from the books and from tossing on the ground (hey--I was a student once! Cheesy)...there is a water bottle holder that I lined with rip stop nylon on the side.

And here is the other side which I loved because it was her avatar and logo!

I put in a full zipper at the top because she did not want stuff to fall out...there is a zippered pocket and three other pockets inside. The shoulder strap is adjustable and padded for comfort...nothing like a full custom bag to meet a person's needs and wants!

It was a labor of love, but tons of fun to make for a special person!

librarylover--looks like you have a new career in inchie making!  Can't believe you are a newbie--they are wonderful! Love the exotic kitty!

malmow--the bar code one is genius!  So clever!

Great idea J_Kieviet!  I have no idea why I kept the parts to my old and long gone sewing machine!  I did keep the bobbin casings, light bulbs and feet, but I have no use for the other parts: buttonholer, and those cam things you stick in to change stitches...I think I will offer them up to anyone who possibly could use them!

I feel like a failure at destashing as well---except that I have become much more conscientious of not just randomingly buying yarns and fabrics without a set project in mind!  I think I have "saved" over $300 so far by NOT buying stuff and just using what I had! Cheesy

love the crochet necklac, that1girl!

The silhouettes are pretty cool--and what great gifts those would make!

Casey2001--uh--never would have know that it was your first machine appliqued quilt!!  It turned out great!!

hee hee--I was thinking the same thing: new joiners will probably be passing me at the rate I am going!

Good news is that I have stopped joining swaps over the summer and will have time for the craftalongs!

I have added about 25 more things to my list, but at least I will be ahead for next year Wink

Should we do something like Christmas in July?

I have picked out all my supplies and fabrics...I just need one tiny thing that I hope to pick up at lunch today!

I need to send out before I go on vacation, so I will be working away all week!

oh yay!  Have fun in class...and if anyone asks about the bag, tell them you had to work your butt off to get it!

I remounted the puzzle on a canvas because I did not like having it behind glass...the textures are the coolest thing and I wanted to be able to see all of it up close... Cheesy  I'll take a pic of it--it looks doubly awesome mounted and displayed above my crafting desk!

ugh--mold can be so nasty!  We have to fight it all the time in this high humidity!  I hate the smell of bleach, but that is all that will kill it around here!  I feel for you--at least I am not allergic!

I can't wait to see what you did and for you to post what you received so far!

I think you have done great in communicating with us despite your personal crap going on!  YAY!!

The string inchies do look complicated but I love the textures!

The naughty inchies are very tasteful and each set so unique...
