I know how I would do the bottom part, but can anyone help me with the top? it looks like moss stitch/seed stitch, but is there something else going on?

also, one of the views shows the back of the hat, which has a big ol' seam. i'm not so keen on knitting a hat flat, but should i do it anyway? if so, any advice on shaping the crown is welcome.

thanks! I called my mom and she gave me some guidance; I'm about halfway through the first one and I hope it turns out well.

so, my mom commissioned me to make a couple of things for a coworker of hers who has a new baby. I made a hat and would like to make some mittens to go with it, but I was wondering roughly how big baby mittens ought to be? how tall, how wide, and wrist circumference? I'm trying to make things a little big that she can wear for a while, so sizing for 3-6 months or so would be helpful.

That is totally awesome.  All the guys in my family are huge Star wars fans.  Too bad I don't  how to make designs...I'll have to figure that out.   

I found the design online.. It's basically like looking at pixels.. I probably couldn't have translated the design into squares myself.. but there are a lot of people who can and post their designs online.

this nifty thing will make designs for you. upload a picture and it makes a pdf chart. often the chart needs a little cleaning up, but it handles the tough part for you:
