1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / drop spindle for beginner on: November 13, 2007 08:15:16 AM
I've read the threads about recommended spindles for beginners, but I'm just wondering about these two specific spindles:

the Ashford student spindle ($6.95) and the Ashford classic spindle ($15)
http://www.woolery.com/Pages/dropspinfr.html#ashford

I noticed that it seems to be the consensus that it's better for a beginner to have a heavier spindle (about 2 oz), but these are 2.8 and 2.75. Is it possible they're too heavy? And the whorl on the classic spindle is 4", which also seems a lot larger than usual.

I really want to buy a decent spindle that will be forgiving to a beginner, so which do you think would be better? Or if you have a different recommendation, that'd be great too.  Thanks!!
2  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / owl and orange flower totes! on: July 08, 2007 02:03:43 PM
Two more totes...

Cute owl print from ReproDepot, lined with a brown and coral (sort of?) polka dot print. And a pocket right up front! This one was a special request for my sister. =]

This one's for my best friend's birthday. The fabric is Heather Ross "Lightning Bugs" (also from ReproDepot), and the lining is from a remnant I found at Joann for less than a dollar.

Close up of the lining. I added a roomy divided pocket for her phone and keys. She loved it!

Comments, questions welcome! =]

3  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / turquoise tote! on: June 13, 2007 09:42:47 PM

There she is, complete with some of my crocheted scarves in the background.

Lined too! I was going to quilt it, but I got lazy.  Undecided The outer fabric is from Joann's, and the fabrics used for the lining and the handles were thrifted.

It's nice and big - I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! Sometimes it's hard to make things "perfect" when you decide the night before you want a bag for tomorrow, haha.
