I took a beginning sewing class at Gaye Marie's sewing lab in Riverside several years ago. Here's their website: http://members.aol.com/sewinglab/

The class was okay - we made a robe. I learned a lot about choosing fabrics, proper sewing techniques, and pattern modifications though.
