42  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / DIY kit swap round five? yes? on: March 31, 2006 09:26:02 AM
okay, i know that the last round is just barely over, but i REALLY REALLY REALLY (really!) want to do this swap and as far as i know, no one else is organizing it.  so i figure i mght as well organize it if i'm so excited about it, right?

anyway, i'm curious as to how many people would be interested right now and when a good time for sign-ups would be.  i'd hate to organize a swap and have nobody show up Wink

leave a reply indicating interest, as well as when you would prefer sign ups to be!  hooray!
43  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / question about making a string of paper lanterns on: March 28, 2006 10:03:52 AM
i was looking around on NotMartha and found her tutorial for tiny pinatas here: http://www.notmartha.org/tomake/tinypinata.html

basically, she used a mixture of water and glue to paste tissue paper on small balloons, then when the tissue paper was dry she popped the balloons, leaving a nice hollow ball.

i've been wanting to buy a string of paper lanterns to decorate my bedroom, but i haven't liked any of the ones i've seen in stores, so i was thinking I COULD TOTALLY MAKE SOME.  can you foresee any problems with buying a string of white christmas lights and somehow attach these tissue paper/glue balls over the lights?  would there be meltage?  a fire hazard?  any other ideas for safely making lights like these?

thanks in advance for the help! Smiley
44  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / bird embroidery... but what to do with it? on: March 24, 2006 06:42:57 PM
while feeding my addiction to 'six feet under' i made this:

i really like it and think it's supercute, but i can't decide what to do with it.  ideas?

the pattern is from needlecrafter.com, by the way.
45  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Completed Projects / dangly earrings on: March 24, 2006 06:28:57 PM
i've only ever made very simple earrings, so i'm pretty proud of learning how to make these.  they have not one but THREE dangly bits.

i'm very excited to make more Smiley

46  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / tank top embroidery? on: March 23, 2006 04:28:46 PM
i bought some plain tank tops (yay old navy!) the other day and want to embroider something on them.

i've decided that i should definitely get some wash-away stablizer (i was looking at it at the store last night... should've bought it then  Angry) but i wanted to see if anyone had any other advice for embroidery on stretchy fabrics.  the tank tops are ribbed and i'm a little worried about ironing on a pattern -- is that a no-no with ribbed fabrics?

any advice will be greatly appreciated Smiley
47  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Stitch And BOTCH / What's going on with my sewing machine?!? on: March 09, 2006 08:00:33 PM
I have a Singer sewing machine (a rather old model that I recently bought at a garage sale and had fixed up a few months ago... so it SHOULD be working fine).  I think it's probably something I'm doing wrong, but I don't know what.

The thread on the back side of the fabric I'm sewing is very loose, and making little loops on the back.  I tried to take a picture with my digital camera, but it didn't turn out, so I called on MS Paint to help me out:

Anybody know what I'm doing wrong/how it can be fixed?  I need to remedy this problem ASAP since I'm working on something for a swap and don't want to miss the deadline. Sad

Thanks in advance!!
48  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Baby quilt! on: March 01, 2006 08:22:53 PM
My first finished (although not first started) quilt!

It's for my (thankfully moving out today!) roommates, who are pregnant.  I kind of want to keep the blanket for myself, but I'm not pregnant, so I think that might be a little mean.

As you can see, my cats loved the blanket and thought it was for them.  They got cat hair all over it.  Their hard work shedding paid off though -- I'm making them a cat pillow from the scraps.

The back of the blanket.  The fabric was all very soft and fleecey, and it was *such* a pain to sew because it turned out to be kind of stretchy.  I had issues with bunching, but I think it turned out okay.

Close-up of the acrobatic bear fabric!  I love it so much.

Thanks for looking! Smiley
49  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / teach-me swap? on: February 09, 2006 09:33:07 PM
I'm not sure if this has been done before, but I thought it could make for a really neat swap.

Each person who signs up lists a few crafty things they're really good at, like making soap or quilting, AND lists a few craft skills they'd like to learn.  Everyone could be matched up in such a way (hopefully... if enough people were interested) that everyone would get to learn a new skill.

For example, if someone wanted to get into jewelry-making, their swap buddy could send them some wire, clasps, a couple neat beads, cool project ideas, and maybe a finished necklace or something.  Would anyone be up for this?  It might be kind of hard to organize, but I think we could figure it out!
