Super cool. Did you use stencils or are these painted freehand? And what kind of paint did you use?

2  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Starting a new sewing magazine? on: July 29, 2008 05:18:20 AM
Awhile ago I came across a group of people asking why there aren't more hip sewing magazines. As they noted, knitters get all their cool hipster magazines, but sewers are usually stuck with McCalls.

I recently got invited to a beta test of a new company called MagCloud---you can create a magazine and upload the files, and they will print copies on demand whenever people order them. The cost is low because you're not paying for a huge batch of printing. I thought it might be interesting to get a group of sewers here on Craftster together to create at least one issue and see how it goes.

Anyone game? (I am not even close to being skilled enough to do this myself, I just started learning to sew a few weeks ago.)

3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Where to buy leather cords? on: July 28, 2008 02:17:06 PM
I actually found exactly what I wanted at the Tandy website and they had it to me the next day by mail. I ended up going with 1/4" strips because I think 1/2" would have been harder to work with.

And MAN I had no idea sewing through leather would be so tricky! I'll have to find a better method before I try this again.

Here are some pictures, up on Flickr, if anyone's interested:

It's one of those kits with, like, 20 project patterns and enough fabric to make one of them. No leather cords, sadly. And you're probably right that I should be searching for straps instead of cords. The pattern says "cord" but it's should be something like latigo leather laces, but wider. Thanks for the advice about Tandy's--I'll look it up!

5  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Where to buy leather cords? on: July 23, 2008 04:58:20 AM
I'm sewing a handbag from Amy Butler's Sew-It Kit and it requires 1/2" leather cords for the handles--not straps pre-made for bags, but simple leather cord. I can't find any leather cord over 1/8" wide through some librarian-worthy online search techniques, and I'm wondering if anyone here might have some suggestions? Is this something that can be readily found in a place in Jo-Ann's? My bag is all sewn and ready to be used...except it's missing straps! Please help! :-)

Another altered film thing to do, which I discovered totally by accident: toss an undeveloped roll of film into the wash with your clothes. Then print the pictures normally. Whoa, does that ever do some weird things.

These are awesome. A question on the stuffing: aren't pincushions usually full of something that sharpens the needles when they're pushed into the cushion? What is that stuff? Just wondering...

While it's not exactly what you're asking for, I'm having a hard time finding STORES that sell anything I'm looking for. But you CAN find those metal tins at http://www.impressrubberstamps.com. And they're not too expensive, either. Look under market place and then under packaging.

I'm having a similar conundrum, and I considered polyuerethane varnish/finish. Has anyone here used that? Any thoughts?
