1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Lace Cast-on on: June 04, 2014 07:52:06 PM
Hello Craftsters!

I am trying to make a feather and fan scarf using malabrigo lace yarn and size 8 straight needles. Normally, my cast on is the long tail, but I need something stretchier due to the shape of the stitches.

I have watched videos, read picture tutorials, and tried the lace cast on multiple times, but Every time I do it, it comes out extremely tight! I have a feeling this may be due to my yarn/needle ratio, but for the laciness, I think it may be necessary.

Does anyone have any tips for how to start this scarf? maybe a different cast on I should try?
2  UNITED STATES / Hawaii / Aloha Oahu! on: September 09, 2013 12:23:18 AM
I have actually been on island for almost a full year now. I don't have a whole lot of time outside of work, and unfortunately I go on hiatus from crafting too much because of it, but it would be lovely to meet up with people to be crafty!
3  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / stash bust multiple weights? (knit or crochet) on: August 03, 2013 11:11:40 PM
So, I have this project that I have posted about before. I am making a project, either knit or crochet, that will include yarn from all over the world as I hit various ports on my eventually Navy deployment.

I want to make one thing to include all of the yarns, but I don't know where to start with a pattern! I am thinking that a scarf or a blanket would be best

I figure this is super similar to a stash busting project, since it will include lots of colors and weights and generally not quite matching yarn.

Does anyone have a favorite multi-yarn project they would like to share?

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / One project with different types of yarn (Around the World) on: August 18, 2012 09:26:48 PM
So I am in the Navy now, and I have decided that I am going to get yarn from every single place I go during my service. I want to knit (or crochet) all of this yarn into one project, I believe a blanket.

Since i can't guarantee getting the same size/type of yarn from wherever I go, does anyone know of a pattern for anything that I could use to incorporate everything? I was thinking blocks or stripes, but even that doesn't guarantee I can get the gauge to match!
6  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / what foods are appetizing when pureed? on: September 07, 2011 08:41:03 AM
Hello crafters! I admire many of your creative cooking skills.
My grandmother is coming home from the hospital today. The thing is, she is on a pureed foods only diet for the rest of her life.
I don't want to just stick a meal in a blender and call it a day, because I know I would hate that.

Do any of you have any ideas of what separate foods can make an appetizing meal when pureed? She especially cannot have bread and doughy things, which makes it even more difficult.

so far, I have:
mashed potatoes
squash
sweet potatoes/yams
possibly creamed corn (gotta check with the doc to see if this is allowed)
pudding
pumpkin pie minus the crust
ice cream
instant breakfast to help with vitamins

I know we need to get all of her nutrients in there, so we'll probably wind up getting some sort of nutritional supplement that can go into these foods and her drinks.
7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / How to give a non-material gift (especially in a crafty way)? on: August 15, 2011 03:24:15 PM
So my boyfriend's birthday is this Friday. I have plans to bring him to something that I know he will really love (outdoor activity type of thing) but I have no idea how to present it to him!

What is a crafty way to give him this day trip as a gift? At the very least, I will make a card with its theme, but I want to do something craftier than that (not putting down paper crafters here - that's just not my forte). I would like him to be able to keep whatever it is for a while after to have the memories.
8  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / what should this be? It hasn't told me yet. on: June 30, 2011 11:52:46 AM
Hey craftsters!

So I just learned the linen stitch which is SUPER pretty in a variegated yarn. My little bit is about 3 inches wide and it doesn't want to be a scarf. What else can I make it into?

I have no need for coasters, or know anyone who does.

9  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Am I increasing too fast for socks? on: May 25, 2011 06:08:22 PM
I am making my first pair of socks (EVER) and I FINALLY think I understand the toe. I am working toe up, using Judy's magic cast on http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html and I got all into making the toe and forgot to knit rows in between increase rows!

I am currently at 44 stitches when I started with 28, so 4 rows of increases. Should I keep going as I have been, increasing every row, or should I frog back (but I FINALLY got it!), or should I start knitting rows between increases now?

I know that whatever option I take, I need to do the same for the second sock. What would you all suggest I do?
10  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / What are you knitting this summer? on: May 24, 2011 09:22:39 PM
Howdy Craftsters!

I am in the process of moving, and at my in between place, I made sure to have my knitting things with me so I wouldn't go totally batty without craft. Grin

Thing is, I have no idea what to make! I am thinking something lacy, but can't think of exactly what.

So my question for you is: What are you making this summer? (or what have been your favorite summer knits)  Cheesy
