I've been working on a lot of swap items, so I don't have any pics yet, but I can at least report on my destashing!
So far this year, I have destashed: 10 balls of knitpicks shamrock= one sweater 2 balls of valley yarns northampton= ninja hat 9 fat quarters and 4 rolls of ribbon= 9 drawstring project bags 2-4oz braids of merino wool=secret stuff 10 strands of glass beads+ a bunch of findings= 20 sets of 5 stitch markers 3 balls of aurucania nature cotton= 9squares for my knitted patchwork blanket
So, it doesn't really make a dent in my stash, but at least its something!! I'll be posting pics of my non-secret stuff soon!
Ok, I've been hemming and hawing, but now I've picked which swaps I wanna fake-join!
My name is superhooker I'm going to join the Make A Purse and Fill It Swap The regular due date of this swap is 2/28/2011, but I want to make my partner a really fabulous purse, and I'll have to design the bag, dye the fabric, and sew it all by hand, so my partner has agreed to a 2 week extension. My purse is due 3/14/2011.
I'm also going to join the Small Gnome Swap Due 2/18/2011
I'm still debating the mug rug swap, but I'm going to see how I'm doing on my current swaps by the 22nd....don't wanna take on too much at once!
I dye with koolaide on my stove top. I soak the yarn or fiber for at least an hour in the sink (warm-hot water), then get a big soup pot, fill about half way with water and bring to almost a boil. Then I sprinkle a bunch of koolaide in the pot, stir it a little, and then drop the wool in the pot. Simmer it until the water turns clear. The wool will drink up all the color.
Before dyeing you want to make SURE to totally soak your fiber, though. If you want a smooth, even color, the wool needs to be evenly wet. If there are dry spots in the middle of your skein, they won't dye the same as the wet spots.
You should definitely skein up your yarn before dyeing. I use my niddy noddy to skein my yarn, but any way you prefer is fine...just don't leave it in a ball, or center pull skein...the dye won't get to the inside fibers.
I think that the fake swaps should just be sure to really stick to the spirit of the original swap. Soo...if you only make 3 items, no biggie, as long as you're making yourself quality items that adhere to the swap theme. So, making a skirt for the anthropologie inspired swap is fine too, I think, because it is really just like you're spoiling yourself, right?
Of course, you can also send yourself extras!!
And...I don't mind if people fake join up with old swaps, as long as you give me a crafting amount (4 points, or one medium item or whatever) and a due date for your fake swap. However, I think current swaps will be more fun, as we'll be swapping together and stuff... But I'm pretty darned flexible, so go with what you want!
I think my hubby is sick of hearing about this swap. He can never remember the names of my swap partners (there have been quite a few), so I tell him a few descriptive words. He started out calling spectrumsparksie "the sweet Australian lady", then "the sweet lady", and now she is officially "my lady." So he'll say, "Oh, that's cool, is that for your lady?" When he saw what I was doing this morning he said, "its a good thing that is for your lady, or I think you would have thrown it across the room by now." And he was right.
LOL Love the "my lady" story. Your hubs is totally one of a kind
HA!!! You should know that you started as "the awesome art lady", and then you were "the Ann Arbor art lady" after we met you the first time in AA, and then you shifted to just plain "Ann Arbor Girl", but now he totally knows your name!!! It only took actually hanging out in your apartment all day to stick in his memory.
If it makes you feel better, I can guarantee that he doesn't know what day of the week it is today.
Would anyone else like to do "fake swaps" with me? Where you choose real swaps that you'd like to join, and then just craft during the same time, and with all the same parameters, but you craft for yourself?
I was thinking that I could start a thread just for fake swapping if there is interest, and I would keep track of what swaps everyone is "joining", and when their due dates come near, I could send a little reminder PM, and everyone can keep up their "communication" in the thread and all...I think that would help me to actually make swap goodies for myself....anyone else?
