5591  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Baseball Scarecrow on: October 04, 2006 06:26:48 PM
I made this scarecrow out of a baseball (not one that belonged to my sons, no way! Mom had to buy her own!)

It's resting on a cardboard ring which I covered in fabric so it looks like a plaid shirt, complete with bow tie.  Then I topped it off with some straw, a straw hat and flowers.

I received a thank you item from princessblueberry today.  Some wonderful fabric!

I didn't realize until I went to post this picture that taking it so close up was going to make it look more like burlap rather than the great fabric it really is.

Thanks! princessblueberry!!

I received my OTT from evildeadgirl today (actually I have to call it my TTT because she actually sent 2 items).

The sweetest coin purse and a wonderful bracelet that's made with elastic!

Aren't the frogs so cute!

The bracelet is much better in person and the perfect color of green for me!

THANKS so much!!!!!!!

I finished one October square (no, I'm not a super achiever, I just had a little time this morning while I was waiting for my pumpkin to bake).

I made the Sweet Gum Leaf and I will raise my hat to anyone who can make the stem like the directions tell you to!  I certainly couldn't.  You are supposed to start with a 1" piece, fold it in 1/2, sew it with a 1/4" seam and then turn it - good luck - I tried all sorts of ways and couldn't succeed in turning it so I did it my own way  Grin

I'll try to post pictures this week.

Can anyone advise what "worsted weight" yarn is, and what sort of yarn do people recommend (I am a Brit by the way)?

Worsted weight yarn is 4 ply yarn and that's what I would use (according to some web sites, it's the best weight for afghans.)

If you use anything with fewer strands, the squares will be smaller and lighter in weight.

What a neat belt idea - I've never seen anything like it!

Wow, that's the easy square?  Looks totally different with all those colors.  I really like it.  If you decide to make it bigger, just add a few more dark rows until it's the right size.

I decided that since others are having a problem with the gauge on the 'easy' square, I better try it and see what I could come up with.  According to my conversion charts, an I hook is 5.5 mm - unfortunately I lost my hook that size and since I tend to crochet rather tight, I decided to try a 6.00 hook.  Well, by round 5 I could already tell that my square was going to be way too large so I ripped it all out and started over.  I decided to try a 5.00 hook and crochet less tight and I now have a 12" square.

It seems to me that a lot depends on your tension.

Hopefully not all squares will give us this much difficulty!  I think, for the next squares I pick, I'm going to try them ahead to see what works for me and then mention that along with the patterns when I post them.

Well, I didn't make posting this before the end of the month but at least I had the satisfaction of knowing it was done by then.

I chose not to go with fall colors because, as I said last month, I needed more color in my quilt!

Now, on to tackle October's square.
